Shooting the SilencerCo Maxim 50 'moderated' muzzleloader (VIDEO)

The guys at IV8888 spent a long time reviewing the suppressed .50-caliber muzzleloader from SilencerCo — including taking it on a successful hunt.

While not everyone is into black powder, the Maxim 50 is an in-line primitive weapon, which puts it out of the purview of the National Firearms Act, meaning that in most states it can be shipped directly to the purchaser without any paperwork. Based on a Traditions Vortek StrikerFire, it uses a 209 shotgun primer ignition. The overall length of the system is 45-inches with the permanently attached moderator while weight is 7.4-pounds.

One thing Eric points out about the Maxim 50 is that it is finicky in its loads, restricted to projectiles that do not have wadding or plastic that separate upon firing in order to clear the baffles. He found good luck with Federal B.O.R. Lock 350-grain projectiles and IMR White Hot pre-formed pellets but noted you have to keep it clean to get decent performance out of the smoke pole.

But they were able to take a doe during Georgia’s primitive weapon season with it, so there is that.
