Now in its fourth year, the run and gun style event in Texas is growing in popularity but is no walk in the park.

Founded in 2014, the non-profit Waco Tactical Fitness Biathlon event takes place over a five-mile course with several shooting stages. Each competitor has to show up with a centerfire rifle and pistol, eye and ear pro, enough ammo to complete the stages, and a stopwatch. While running between stations, rifles have to be unloaded and pistols have to be holstered.

The course is no joke, with photos showing competitors clamoring over plywood walls, taking a 60-pound sand dummy for a drag, monkeying around on horizontal ladders, firing from treetop cuckoo nests and simulated rooftops, and, oh yeah, running.

“If you can’t do a few pull-ups, scramble up and down rough/rocky hills and push through wooded areas, some of the obstacles will be difficult to overcome,” says the site.

According to the Waco Tribune, about 150 people were set to participate in a 10K with seven shooting stations last Saturday, and about 85 are signed up for a 5K with six shooting stations Sunday.

“I truly believe that this format is the next evolution in the shooting sports, as far as competition goes,” said Kevin Greb, president and co-founder of WTF. “Different shooting events, basically we combine the Crossfit popularity with the shooting experience.”

According to the final results, about 93 competitors made it to the scoreboard on Saturday and 60 on Sunday with some stages seeing as many as half fail.

Better luck next year…
