Brady Center sues ATF for information on leaked 'white paper'

The federal government offered a $25,000 reward for information about a shipment of firearms stolen from a UPS facility in Missouri over the weekend.

The Kansas City field division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said Tuesday unknown suspects forced entry into a UPS freight service center on North Le Compte Road in Springfield in the overnight hours of Oct. 28 into Oct. 29, intercepting multiple guns destined for a federally licensed dealer. The Springfield News-Leader confirmed Tuesday the firearms were headed for Bass Pro Shops.

“We don’t have a video image, we don’t have a description,” ATF spokesman John Ham told the newspaper. “We’ve got a pretty wide open time frame.”

Ham said the agency believes the suspects weren’t targeting the firearms shipment — which included handguns and shotguns — but certainly didn’t waste the opportunity once inside.

“We’re operating under the assumption they didn’t target the load because it had firearms,” he told the newspaper. “Once they got into the shipments, it would have been clear what they were taking.  They were wrapped and put on pallets in gun boxes.”

The agency encouraged tipsters to call 1-800-ATF-GUNS or email or text “ATFKC” to 63975.

“It’s all important,” Ham said of any information. “We just never know how important until we put all the pieces of the puzzle together.”
