Former deputy killed outside of Colorado sheriff’s office

An investigation of the shooting death of a former sheriff’s deputy by on-duty deputies outside a Colorado sheriff’s office has been pushed to district investigators for review.

Per department protocol, Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office said the district’s Critical Response Team will review Sunday’s police shooting of Mark Bidon, 50, outside the department’s headquarters building.

In a statement, the department said an on-duty deputy leaving the parking lot saw a vehicle backed into the exit gate area, so he approached it. When he made contact, he saw that the driver, Bidon, had a gun. Two other deputies arrived almost immediately. When Bidon pointed the gun at one of the deputies, they opened fire.

The deputies administered CPR, but Bidon died on the scene. None of the deputies were injured during the incident. The three deputies involved were placed on leave, per standard protocol. The incident is being investigated by the 18th Judicial District Critical Response Team.

Bidon served as a deputy at the sheriff’s office from 2000 to 2010, but, according to local media, he became the subject of an Internal Affairs investigation one month prior to leaving the sheriff’s office.

It’s unclear what the investigation was centered around, but Bidon later accused the department of “blacklisting” him, leading him to file a lawsuit against the department in 2015.

Bidon applied for some 75 positions with multiple law enforcement agencies but was denied employment with them all, local media reports. At the time of his death, Bidon was working as a security guard at a local supermarket.
