Nashville sees record-breaking 198 guns turned in at buyback

Authorities in Nashville collected nearly 200 guns over the weekend during a buyback event.

Gift Cards for Guns was held at the Greater Revelations Missionary Baptist Church Saturday and offered those who turned in a gun a $50 MAPCO gift card, good for gas, as well as a $25 Kroger gift card, which could be used to purchase a turkey or ham and other food items for a Thanksgiving meal. Any and all weapons were accepted on a no questions asked basis.

Altogether, 198 guns were collected, a record-breaking number for the city, which has recently struggled with an increase in gun violence, especially among the city’s youth.

The Gift Cards for Guns initiative was started in 2011. Including Saturday’s event, there have been six buybacks in as many years, with a grand total of 658 surrendered firearms.
