Self-defense shooting investigated in Conway, Arkansas

Authorities downgraded the description of an alleged self-defense shooting last week in Conway, Arkansas, from a home invasion to a mere robbery.

Conway Police Maj. Chris Harris said they wanted to quell additional fears that may resonate after an incident that ended with one man dead was initially called in as a home invasion on the east side of town.

“We’ve had a lot of calls here this morning from citizens generally concerned about it if there’s still potential danger in their neighborhood close to the scene. This was not a home invasion, this was a robbery of the homeowner,” Harris said in a video posted to the department’s Facebook page.

Conway police received the call a little before 5 pm on Feb. 15 about a home invasion. When officers arrived, they found the lifeless body of Demarco Taylor, 18, of Conway. Investigators later learned Taylor and the homeowner knew each other and at some point Taylor and another person were invited inside the home.

At some point while inside the home, Taylor and the other person tried to rob the homeowner and that’s when the homeowner opened fire, killing Taylor. The second person reportedly ran away.

“Upon further investigation we realized this was not a home invasion or any type of random act of violence,” Harris said.

The homeowner told police he was defending himself. Police say they’re investigating the matter as a homicide and that they’re still searching for the second person. So far, they have not filed charges in the matter.
