NSSF, McGruff team up for Project Childsafe gun safety spots (VIDEOS)

Tapping in a well-known crime dog, the trade group for the gun industry has released a pair of firearm safety videos aimed at kids and young adults.

McGruff the Crime Dog’s “4-Steps of Gun Safety” boil down to: “Stop. Don’t Touch. Walk Away. Tell an Adult,” as told by the anthropomorphic overcoat-clad dog. The two animated spots, ” Not Cool, Kyle” and “Molly’s Mischief” are developed for children in early middle school and grades pre-K to 4, respectively.

McGruff is loaned to the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s Project Childsafe program by the National Crime Prevention Council, a nonprofit organization founded in the 1980s specializing in countering youth victimization while engaging in community building.

According to the NSSF, Childsafe has distributed over 37 million free firearm safety kits since its launch two decades ago. Each kit includes a cable-style gun lock with instructions and a safety booklet. Present in all 50 states and associated with 15,000 law enforcement agencies, the program started with a grant in Texas under then-Gov. George W. Bush in 1999.
