Dozens of Beautiful A-10s Gather for Hawgsmoke '22
"BRRRRT" delivery systems from 14 active duty, Air National Guard, and Air Force Reserve units are gathering in Idaho this week to sing the song of their people.
The Idaho Air National Guard’s 124th Fighter Wing is hosting the biennial A-10 Thunderbolt II (aka "Warthog') bombing, missile, and tactical gunnery competition, "Hawgsmoke," this week at Gowen Field outside of Boise. Joining the 124th for the event are over 150 pilots, maintainers, and weapon teams from units based around the globe.
As the winners of the previous competition host it – the 124th's "Skullbangers" of the 190th Fighter Squadron cleaned up at the last Hawgsmoke, winning Top Tactical, Top Strafe, and Top Bombing team awards – they are the home team to beat this year.
According to the website for the event that was first held in 1996, it stems from the Air Force's old Air Force Worldwide Gunnery Competition, "Gunsmoke," which dated back to 1949.
Photos from the event show at least 38 A-10s on the ground at Gowen. It's an impressive sight, especially when you think that each one is capable of delivering 30mm shells at a withering 4,200 rounds per minute from their massive two-ton GAU-8A Avenger cannons.

Idaho's Warhawk Air Museum also performed a flyover to kick off the event with two classic WWII warbirds, a Curtiss P-40N Warhawk, and a P-47D Thunderbolt. (Photo: Master Sgt. Becky Vanshur/U.S. Air National Guard)
Hawgsmoke 2022 runs through Sept.9. And, since you came this far, we'll leave you with that beautiful BRRRT B-roll, shot on Wednesday at the Saylor Creek Range near Bruneau, Idaho.
