For years, Bergara has been setting themselves up as a pack leader in the higher-end production bolt action rifle market. This year, at SHOT Show 2023, is no exception as they introduced perhaps their finest mountain hunting rifle yet.

Meet the B-14 Squared Crest

The Crest is built around Bergara’s proven B-14 bolt action, but now, its furniture gets an upgrade. This iteration sits inside a full carbon fiber stock that’s lightweight without being weak, backed up with a carbon spine that, according to Bergara advertising is” nearly indestructible.” The stock is contoured for comfortable shooting whether hunting or competing on long-range targets.

The forend is slimmer when compared with previous B-14 models, yet still practical.

The buttstock is key to the rifle’s success, with a sleek vertical grip, elevated comb, and length of pull spacers. There are both QD-sling mounts and swivel studs. As we’ve come to expect on rifles like this one, the forend shows double studs for attachment of both a sling and a bipod simultaneously.

Ultralight Mountain Rifle?

Depending on caliber selection, barrels will be either 20- or 22-inch. Though it is considered a mountain rifle, barrels are built of steel--4140 CrMo to be exact. They are fluted, threaded at 5/8x24TPI, and already dressed with the company’s proprietary Omni muzzle brake. All metalwork is coated in Sniper Gray Cerakote.

Buyers are anxious to learn the weight of what is being pitched as a lightweight rifle, but it does tip the scale at 6.8- to 7.2-pounds sans optic and accessories, depending upon caliber selection. That’s on the high end of what many backcountry hunters would actually consider an ultralight, but the features on the

Squared Crest certainly put this offering into a high-performance category. We can’t help but be curious how this rifle would handle with a carbon fiber barrel.

Though the Crest is the only model currently listed as part of the B-14 Squared series, we’d be surprised if more models aren’t added. Retail pricing on the B-14 Squared Crest starts at $1,999.00.

Conclusion

Bergara of Spain has built a reputation as a maker of quality, accurate-shooting barrels, so we have high expectations for the Squared Crest, though an outright accuracy guarantee was readily available. The newbie takes its place in Bergara’s hunting rifle catalog alongside the standard B-14, B-14 Wilderness, and the Premier Series.
