On this week’s episode of "Two Guys One Gun," the crew tackles bottleneck pistol cartridges. The modern handgun market is dominated by 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP, with little love given to bottleneck pistol cartridges.
With NATO just adopting the 5.7x28mm cartridge, it is worth exploring why the bottleneck pistol cartridge is not as popular as it could be. In the past 75 years, few bottleneck pistol cartridges have been introduced or adopted for production. The bottleneck design boosts velocity, cuts bullet drop, and can add some zip to a handgun.
The last mass-produced bottleneck cartridge was the Soviet 7.62x25mm Tokarev round, with basically no modern loadings in production today. Imagine a pistol caliber carbine chambered in a pistol caliber with more range, higher velocity, and more power. Maybe this will encourage some companies to start up some modern production on some of these old bottleneck designs.
What are your thoughts? Are there some old bottleneck rounds that you would like to see make a comeback? Maybe bottleneck cartridges are a new concept to you. Either way, sit back, relax, and explore an odd pistol cartridge concept.
