Marlin Model 444

The Marlin Model 444 is a lever-action hunting rifle chambered in .444 Marlin. The Model 444 is part of Marlin’s big-bore hunting series (Model 1895) and it shares two distinct features with the series.

First, its barrel has undergone Marlin’s Ballard-type rifling, which carves six deep and wide grooves that are supposed to help improve accuracy on high-power rifles. It’s a slow process that puts almost no stress is put on the metal.

The second, it has a tubular magazine that’s non-detachable and runs along the barrel. Rounds are fed through the front of the tube and it chambers like a shotgun—a spring pushes the round down as the bolt slides the next one into place.

Most 1895 models use the .45-70 Government. cartridge whereas the Model 444 uses .444 Marlin, which is described as a longer .44 Mag. However, both the .45-70 and .444 are preferred for hunting at a shorter range because they have such a low velocity but powerful impact, so it’ll kill larger game without destroying a lot of the meat.

Marlin recommends the 444 for hunting deer, larger game and black bear.
