The Romanian WASR is a semi-automatic assault rifle chambered in 7.62x39mm. The WASR is an inexpensive variant of the AK-47 rifle, but manufactured by Romania. Even though some consider the WASR a bottom of the barrel AK, it is still a reliable and rugged rifle. It was designed to be exported and sold rather than for use by any specific group.
Like the AK, the WASR uses a gas-piston operating system, so to cycle a round propellant gases are caught into a tube near the muzzle that directs the gas onto a piston, which drives the piston back to push the bolt back.
Features include stamped steel receiver, wooden stock, a side mounted rail and it uses a single-stack magazine. The WASR rifles are imported, modified and distributed by Century Arms. The company typically modifies the weapons so they meet certain state requirements. Century Arms offers 11 variants of the WASR.
