The Smith and Wesson M&P15VTAC is a semi-automatic gas-operated rifle chambered in 5.56 NATO and .223 Rem. Gas operated feeding systems capture gases released from the firing of a round and use this energy to push the bolt rearward, thereby ejecting the spent casing and chambering a new round. Smith and Wesson is the largest manufacturer of handguns in the United States. Headquartered in Springfield, Massachusetts, the company was founded in 1852 by Horace Smith and Daniel B. Wesson.

The M&P15VTAC features a 30-round detachable magazine and an aluminum receiver. Chromed components include bolt carrier, bore, and gas key. The M&P15VTAC also employs a hard coat black anodized protective finish.

The M&P15VTAC shares a number of common features with other Smith and Wesson tactical rifles, but differs in that it includes a number of brand name accessories such as a Surefire brand flash suppressor, a G2 light with VTAC brand light mount, a VTAC/JP brand tactical handguard, three adjustable Picatinny rails, and a VTAC brand padded tactical sling.

The M&P15VTAC is recommended by S&W for competitive, recreational, and law enforcement applications.
