Offering speedy firepower in a Glock package, Franklin Armory dropped their new G-S173 Glock 17 binary trigger system in a surprise move on Monday. The system allows you to customize your own Glock 17 with a paired trigger and slide to enjoy near-giggle-switch-fast levels of fun on the range.

“We kind of threw a little curveball as SHOT Show went on Monday,” said Brandon Dunham, director of marketing at Franklin Armory. “We decided to show up and mic-drop a brand-new binary trigger system for the Glock 17 Gen 3.”

The current system is geared specifically for the Glock 17 Gen 3, with more models to follow. We got our hands on it during 2022 SHOT Show Industry Day at the Range in Nevada, and we can happily confirm it will send showers of brass casings even for shooters who are newer to binary trigger systems. If you want to maximize that speed, however, you’ll want to embrace a generous amount of trigger slapping to keep the gun cycling, so it might take a few mags to get used to the rhythm.

From our time on the range, the G-S173 stood out as a crowd favorite, even though Franklin Armory rolled in with a wide enough selection of other binary trigger guns to require a host of dedicated reloading personnel to keep the line moving.

The trigger system itself is actually selectable between normal semi-auto fire and the binary trigger. The lever on the left side of the slide allows users to easily alternate between the two. The selector lever also has a cancellation feature, which gives you the ability to stop the binary function even after pulling the trigger, allowing you to bypass firing the second round upon releasing the trigger should the need arise.

“This is where all the magic happens,” explained Dunham, who has clearly found the gun’s rhythm having personally drained d a 17-round magazine in about two seconds while we were on the range. “It’s a two-position binary trigger. You’ve got your semi, and you’ve got your binary. And that’s where the fun begins.”

Expected release for the kit is later in 2022, but hopefully in time for some summer shooting fun. With a current target price of around $899 for both the slide and trigger, it’s a bargain deal compared to unobtanium that is the full-auto Glock 18, which reached the market in 1986 just in time to make it on the naughty list with changes to the National Firearms Act the very same year.

That said, if you are looking to send showers of 9mm brass in beautiful, shining arcs on the range, the G-S173 is more than capable of accommodating your desires. We do highly recommend stocking up on some extended magazines. It’s well worth the investment.
