Finally, the gun world got it’s chance to see and shoot the much-anticipated Angstadt Arms MDP-9 at SHOT Show 2022 in Las Vegas this month with the knowledge it was also in full production. The firearm’s full-scale release has been teasing gun gurus with a unique roller-delayed blowback AR-style 9mm for nearly two years now.

The Angstadt MDP-9 Has Landed

“I know a lot of you have been waiting for this for a while. We did a sneak peek at SHOT Show two years ago, and then the world kind of melted, and we put it on the back burner so we could catch up with demand on our existing products. But now, this is in full production,” said Angstadt Arms President Rich Angstadt, noting availability should begin around March.

What sets the MDP-9 apart from its older cousin, the straight-blowback UDP-9, is the use of the roller-delayed system that cuts out the need for a buffer tube and creates a softer shooting and more compact firearm – 14 inches long at around 3.6 pounds.

If compact and lightweight weren’t enough, the gun is easy shooting with or without a suppressor thanks to the roller-delayed system that mitigates felt recoil. We can attest to that from our time on the range. At the same time, you still have that compatibility with AR-style lowers and the ergonomically friendly controls familiar to modern shooters. Yes, that does mean the UDP-9 lower can take the MDP-9 upper, which drops the buffer tube and shortens the entire system.

The UDP-9, while small, still required a buffer tube that added more length to the gun. A roller-delayed system changed that for the MDP-9, which also hosts a 5.85-inch barrel with a fluted chamber. (Photo: Paul Peterson/Guns.com)

The gun has a somewhat HK MP5-style side charging handle that can be swapped to either side and replaces the T-shaped AR-style charging handle found on the UDP-9. On top, it runs a 1913 Pic rail, which is also on the rear end and ready to embrace a brace or a stock if you want to file the paperwork for the later as an SBR. It will also be offered simply as a stand-alone pistol. The barrel has a three-lug flash hider that’s ready to host a suppressor.

Just for the extra kick of it, the gun can also be had with a nice German-made Zarges protective case complete with laser-cut foam inserts to protect your MDP-9 and all the extras. More than your standard plastic range buddy, the shiny metal briefcase has a very James Bond/MI6 standard-issue vibe. Which, you know, is pretty cool.

Did we mention it takes Glock magazines? Because as cool as the case is, that’s a clinch feature in and of itself. There will be several versions with a range of options. For the entire limited-edition kit you see here – suppressor, mags, gun, optics, and custom briefcase – you’re looking at roughly $4,995, with more budget-friendly options and more coming.

Current MSRP on just the pistol on Angstadt Arm’s website has it at $2,599, and listed color options included black, FDE, and tactical grey. But keep your eyes open for stand-alone upper assemblies and other parts, those are TBD for the future.
