Connecticut-based Mossberg added another fast-shooting scattergun to its line of 940 Pro shotguns with the unveiling of its new 12-gauge 940 Pro Tactical shotgun with a 3-inch chamber this week. While previous models were designed for hunting and competition, the Tactical targets a new market with an eight-shot capacity built on the feature-filled 940 Pro platform.

This new offering from Mossberg is based around the 940 Pro’s redesigned gas-operating system capable of firing 1,500 rounds between cleanings, according to Mossberg’s torture testing. Boasting many of the same features common to the 940 Pro line, the gun also hosts several modifications better suited for tactical uses.

Barrel length comes in at 18.5 inches with a fiber-optic front sight atop a matte-black barrel. Overall length comes in at 37.5 inches. You can compare that to the longest of the hunting-specific 940 Pro clan, the Show Goose, which measures in at a whopping 50.75 inches. The Tactical also offers an adjustable length of pull between 12.4 and 14.25 inches. Additionally, the threaded barrel comes with a cylinder-bore choke tube more suitable for tactical uses, though that can be swapped out for interchange AccuChoke options.

Receiver cuts allow for the mounting of low-profile micro-dot sights using a Shield RMSc footprint – cover plate included – and the magazine tube holds seven 2.75-inch shells, offering 7+1 onboard capacity out the gate. The receiver is also drilled and tapped for mounting a rail.

In another nod to the Tactical’s name, the barrel clamp has M-LOK slots for adding accessories and a sling swivel stud to accompany the one in the stock. The synthetic forend has a slim profile, and both the forend and stock are a matte-black finish. While still boasting an oversized bolt release, it has been streamlined to be less obtrusive for tactical uses compared to the hunting models within the 940 Pro family.

Some features shared with the rest of the 940 Pro line include the enlarged, beveled loading port that accompanies an elongated elevator and orange anodized follower. The charging handle is elongated and knurled. Inside, the gun offers corrosion-resistant parts, including the gas piston, magazine tube, hammer, and sear that are all nickel-boron coated for resilience

The Tactical’s launch comes on the heels of the 940 Pro Turkey shotguns released just last January. The newcomers join the Field, Waterfowl, Snow Goose, and JM Pro competition model, demonstrating a continued investment in the line on the part of Mossberg.
