One of the biggest names in the 1911 game has just revamped one of its most popular rail guns to run on the milder-recoiling 9mm.

Previously just offered in .45 ACP, the Springfield Armory 1911 Operator series will now be available in a new 9+1 round 9mm version. Like the previous versions, it includes a forged carbon steel frame and slide, match-grade forged stainless-steel barrel, with a fully supported feed ramp, and a low-key Cerakote black finish. Standard are ambidextrous safety/lock levers, scalloped VZ G10 grips, and a Tritium front sight with a Tactical Rack white dot rear.

Despite all the modern upgrades, it uses an old-school GI-style recoil system with a traditional barrel bushing, which allows for a tool-free takedown in the field. (Photo: Springfield Armory)

The TRP/Operator 1911 rail gun series has been one of Springfield's most enduring over the years, starting with the old 1990s series Mil-Spec Operator, which proved a hit with police response teams across the country. In turn, it was replaced in 2002 with the Loaded Operator, while the more current TRP Operator made its debut in 2008. It has since been augmented by the more budget-priced Range Operator and Ronin Operator

"Springfield Armory 1911 pistols are renowned for their performance, strength and capabilities," says Steve Kramer, Springfield's VP of Marketing. "And with the popular Operator pistol now available in 9mm, shooters have a new option with this duty-grade premiere defensive pistol."

The new 9mm Springfield Armory 1911 Operator ships with two nine-round magazines with bumper pads and a branded zipper bag. MSRP is $1,184.
