Smith & Wesson this week announced a new offering for those looking for a light and accurate semi-auto rimfire pistol chambered in .22 Winchester Magnum – and holds a lot of bullets.

The new S&W M&P22 Magnum is a polymer-framed autoloader that pairs a TEMPO gas-operated barrel system with an internal hammer-fired action – the latter a feature borrowed from the innovative M&P 5.7 introduced earlier this year. Optics ready and shipping with 30-round flush-fitting magazines, the  M&P22 Magnum has fully ambidextrous surface controls (to include a manual safety lever), a flat-faced trigger, and a 4.35-inch stainless-steel barrel.

Overall length is 8.4 inches, putting the S&W M&P22 Magnum at about the size of a 1911 Government Model, but due to its rimfire nature and polymer frame, it only weighs 22 ounces, sporting a full-sized grip and a full Pic rail. (All photos: S&W)

Note the ambi controls – sure to be a hit with southpaws – fiber-optic front sights, and a direct-mount optics cut that comes standard on the S&W M&P22 Magnum.

Smith says that, between the TEMPO gas-operated system that keeps components locked in place until the bullet passes the gas port, increasing performance, and the flat-faced trigger paired with an internal hammer, the M&P22 Mag is a smooth performer.

"The  M&P22 Magnum combines the best features of our internal hammer fire control system with the patented TEMPO barrel design, creating a smooth operating experience for the shooter," said John Myles, Smith's senior manager of New Products. "The .22 WMR is a versatile and field-savvy cartridge that has been a legacy among American shooters, hunters, and trappers for decades. Smith & Wesson is proud to offer a new pistol that further supports the use of this cartridge outdoors or on the range."
The MSRP of the new S&W M&P22 Magnum is $649. Its primary competitor in the market space would likely be the more... um, futuristic looking Kel-Tec PMR-30, which has about the same size and capacity but runs an MSRP of $495.

At release, we spotted some initial reviews on the M&P22 Magnum from Honest Outlaw and Sootch, each running almost a half-hour, should you be looking for a deeper dive.
