New: Ruger American Rifle Generation II Bolt Action Models

Ruger has introduced the first new generation of its venerable value bolt-action line that first hit the market over a decade ago.

Ruger is no stranger to the hunting rifle game, having debuted Jim Sullivan's well-liked M77 line in the 1960s. However, as prices started escalating on these guns and with budget deer rifles like the Savage Axis and Remington 783 out there, the company followed up with the M77 with a more value-minded half-brother in the Ruger American line in 2012. Now, the time has come to update the design and Ruger has debuted the second generation of the American Rifle.

The new Ruger American Rifle Generation II at launch will be in a Standard model with a 20-inch barrel as well as a Ranch model sporting a carbine-length 16.1-inch barrel. Both use detachable magazines – AR-style, AI, or Mini-30 depending on platform chambering – an adjustable splatter-finished synthetic stock with an installed low comb, Cerakote finish on metal parts, and a three-position tang safety.

A Ruger Marksman adjustable trigger is standard as is a full-diameter three-lug bolt with a short, 70-degree bolt throw as well as an oversized bolt handle. In most models, the rifle will sport a medium-profile spiral fluted barrel and include a radial muzzle brake.

The Standard Ruger American Rifle Generation II will include a grey stock and come in seven popular centerfire hunting caliber options at launch: .223 Rem, .204 Ruger, .243 Win, 6.5 CM, 7mm-08 Rem, .308 Win, .450 Bushmaster. Early next year this will be augmented with a .350 and 400 Legend, 6mm ARC, 6 CM, 6.5 Grendel, .30-06, .270 Win, .300 Win Mag, 6.5 PRC, 7 PRC, and 22 ARC. (Photo: Ruger)

The Ranch variant of the Ruger American Rifle Generation II — The Ruger American Rifle Generation II Ranch series has a shorter 16.1-inch barrel ending in a factory-installed muzzle brake on industry-standard thread patterns to allow easy mounting of a suppressor. Unlike the grey furniture on the Standard models, it will ship with a Flat Dark Earth stock with a black splatter texture. The MSRP on the new Ruger American Rifle Generation II line, regardless of model or caliber, is $729.
