The FN SCAR is one of the best rifle platforms on the market. This short-stroke gas piston rifle has cut its teeth with the U.S. Special Operations community for the past 20 years and continues to be a popular choice.

Here we have a SCAR 20S and SCAR 17S DMR both chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor, giving the platforms a better-performing cartridge at distance over the traditional .308 Win chambering. In the past 10 years, 6.5 Creedmoor has risen in popularity due to its impressive ballistic coefficient, accuracy potential, and increased range.

SCAR 17S DMR

The SCAR 17S has been my favorite battle rifle for some time, as it is incredibly easy to control. However, until recently, the platform has only been offered in .308 Win. The SCAR 17S is the perfect Designated Marksman Rifle (DMR), as the platform increases the power and distance over something like a traditional AR in 5.56X45mm.

The 16-inch barrel makes this rifle easy to maneuver like a traditional battle rifle, while the DMR stock allows for length of pull and cheek weld adjustment to accommodate any optic option. Even with a 16-inch barrel, the 6.5 Creedmoor cartridge is more than capable of reaching accurately to long distances, making this a versatile rifle.

SCAR 20S

FN released the SCAR 20S in 2018, and it has quickly become one of the most popular bench-rest semi-automatic rifles on the market. As the name implies, the rifle features a 20-inch heavy barrel designed for stability and heat-resistance to keep shots more consistent.

The heavy 20-inch barrel on the 20S is designed to maximize the 6.5 Creedmoor round's performance.

The SCAR 20S is heavier than the SCAR 17S but uses the same magazines and controls. The rifle is designed to maximize the performance of the 6.5 Creedmoor cartridge, with the stated goal from FN to offer anyone the ability to easily hit targets at 1,000 yards. The rifle features the same DMR-style stock, allowing it to accommodate a large selection of optics.

Summary

Both rifles exemplify FN’s quality and precise engineering. The Belgian-born company is known for precision accuracy and cold-hammer-forged barrels, making it easy to trust FN for an accurate rifle design.
