New: Smith & Wesson Model 1854 Stealth Hunter in .45-70
Tennessee-based Smith & Wesson on Tuesday debuted a model in its growing lever gun catalog, chambered for the thumping .45-70 Government round.
The newest S&W Model 1854 is a Stealth Hunter variant, featuring an all-black Armornite configuration that comes with a suppressor-ready 16.5-inch 410 stainless-steel barrel. It is housed in a T6 aluminum forend and sits on a steel receiver, which includes a 10.5-inch top Picatinny rail. The model is completed with a large loop lever.
Other features include a flat trigger and a HIVIZ H3 fiber-optic front sight paired with an XS adjustable rear ghost ring sight. The black synthetic stock has textured grip panels, while the underbarrel magazine tube holds five rounds.
In comparison, Smith's other two .45-70 M1854s both feature a 20-inch barrel with a 6+1 capacity, offered in stainless/synthetic or matte blued/walnut finishes.
The overall length of the new S&W Model 1854 Stealth Hunter in .45-70 is 34.3 inches, largely due to its shortened 16.5-inch barrel. It is the first Stealth Hunter model in a rifle caliber, the other three being chambered in .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum, and .45 Colt. (Photos: S&W)
The forged 416 stainless-steel receiver has an all-black Armornite finish, which Smith also uses on most of its M&P series semi-auto handguns.
Of note, the barrel runs 11/16x24 TPI threads under its muzzle protector while the aluminum handguard sports 15 M-LOK accessory slots.
Besides the 10.5-inch top rail for optics, the Stealth Hunter ships with a HIVIZ front sight and an XS ghost ring in the rear.
The MSRP for the new S&W Model 1854 Stealth Hunter in .45-70 is $1,499, which is the same ask as the company's traditional walnut-clad 20-inch variant, while the stainless model with synthetic furniture is $100 less.
