Smith & Wesson has teamed up with "Field Ethos" adventure magazine to produce a great classic Model 36 snubby with a very old-school kind of feel to it.

The new Model 36 Field Ethos revolver is a five-shot J-frame revolver chambered in .38 Special +P with a 1.88-inch barrel. What makes it different beyond that is that it is a "no lock" gun, sans the detested-by-many frame locking mechanism.

Plus, it wears a set of smooth Tyler Gunworks premium walnut boot grips, has a Smith & Wesson's Performance Center action job for a slick yet even trigger pull, and, while most Model 36s are DA/SA with a large hammer spur, this one is bobbed for better concealment – a factor that opens it to pocket carry.

Note the specially engraved Field Ethos trademark on its side plate. No frills except where it matters – the trigger, action, and grips – it is to snub-nosed carry revolvers what Hemingway is to the short story.

Field Ethos terms it the "Tropical Edition," a name that Smith hasn't carried over to its catalog. The reason given by FE is that the gun "pairs well with a Hawaiian shirt, gold chain, and mustache."

With a 19.5 ounce weight, this all-steel .38 Special with a retro look has an MSRP of $1,099. For a gun that gets you most of the way there but with slim grips and a hammer spur, try the S&W Model 36 Classic, which runs a few hundred less.
