New: Smith & Wesson New Model 940-3 9mm J-Frame Snub
Tennessee-based S&W had announced a return to its regular catalog of the 9mm J-frame with snub-nosed revolver for 2026.
The original shrouded-hammer DAO Model 940 has become something of a collector's piece over the years, having only been made from 1991 to 1998. The company brought it back last year in a limited run through select distributors with a fluted barrel, XS night sights, and VZ Diamond Black Cherry grips, with an ask of over $1K.
The new model is a standard catalog offering, the 940-3, that still gives the user a five-shot 9mm (using moon clips) built on a stainless-steel no-lock frame – and you still get the XS sight.
The new S&W Model 940-3 measures 6.6 inches in overall length, 1.3 inches in width, and weighs 23 ounces. This five-shot revolver is chambered in 9mm Luger and features a 2.17-inch stainless-steel barrel and fluted cylinder. (Photo: S&W)
It includes a snag-free concealed hammer and comes equipped with a Tritium XS front night sight and a U-notch dovetail rear sight right out of the box. It ships with a Hogue Over-Molded Rubber Bantam grip installed.
The MSRP on the new S&W Model 940-3 in 9mm is $899, with the "street price" likely a little less.
