The Land of Lincoln is the next state attempting to impose an arbitrary ban on Glocks and similar-style pistols on the pretext that they are "convertible."

On Thursday, the Democrat-controlled House Gun Violence Prevention Committee gave its stamp of approval to HB 4417, making the proposal eligible for a vote on the Illinois House floor. The bill targets so-called “machine gun convertible pistols," which, although Glock isn't mentioned by name in the language of the measure, makes clear that Glock-style pistols are in its cross-hairs. 

"This legislation is not only unconstitutional but a completely misguided policy proposal, removing the ability for law-abiding citizens to purchase some of the most popular and commonly owned firearms on the market," says the National Rifle Association's Institute for Legislative Action on HB 4417. 

Meanwhile, national anti-gun groups with deep pockets, such as Everytown, are backing the measure, characterizing the pistols at the center of the bill as "DIY machine guns." 

Um, ok. 

Republicans in the state House argue the proposal, should it become law, will do little to make the streets safer. 

“Banning Glocks will do nothing to stop gun crime,” state Rep. Christopher Davidsmeyer (R-Murrayville) said. “Switches are already illegal, and violent criminals don’t follow our existing gun laws. We need crime control, not gun control."

If HB 4417 becomes law, Illinois would join California, which adopted a similar law in 2025 and then immediately faced a lawsuit from pro-gun groups. Maryland and Connecticut are also pushing Glock bans.
