Whether you have recently moved to the Austin area, you're a new gun owner, or need to brush up on your skills, use this list as a quick reference to find a shooting range with the services you seek.

The Range at Austin

The Range at Austin boasts truly modern Texas fun in a 52,000-square-foot contemporary facility. They offer an indoor public shooting range, as well as training and education, gun rentals, and a retail store stocked with firearms, accessories, and ammunition. Gunsmithing is also available. Looking to rent a machine gun? They have that too!

Proudly serving all skill levels, from beginners to highly experienced, The Range at Austin provides quality training and instruction from basic gun safety classes to advanced one-on-one specialty training. The Range also offers classes for concealed carry handgun licenses.

The Range at Austin is open to the public daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., with extended hours available for members only. Rental fees start at $25/hour per lane and $10 for each additional user in the same lane. Handgun rentals are $15, rifles rent for $20, and suppressed firearm rentals are $25. Ammunition prices for rentals vary greatly, between $5 and $35, depending on the firearm for which it's needed.

Red's Indoor Range

Serving Central Texas for 25 years, Red's Indoor Gun Range is the oldest indoor range in the Austin area. They offer lanes for rifle and handgun practice and have two locations to better serve the community. Other services include Texas License to Carry (LTC) classes and private one-on-one instruction for all experience levels. Gun rentals are also available, and in addition to the shooting range, Red's offers a full retail store with all types of firearms, accessories, and ammunition.

Range fees are $16 an hour per shooter, with discounts available for active military and law enforcement personnel. Husbands and wives shooting together also receive a discount. Minors under the age of 18 shoot for free, but must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Red's Indoor Shooting Range also supports the female shooting community by offering $8 an hour range rentals and free gun rentals for ladies every Monday. Range Officers are always available to ensure everyone's safety, and will gladly assist anyone if needed.

Red's has more than 60 rifles and handguns available to rent for $10 each plus the cost of ammo, and the experienced staff is ready to help new shooters find the perfect fit if desired. LTC classes cost $75, and private instruction, which includes training, gun rentals, and range time, is $50 per hour.

Red's Indoor Shooting Range is open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the North location, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily at the South location.

Valor Defense Academy

Valor Defense Academy is a firearms training facility that offers a unique simulated shooting range. This premier facility houses the industry's most advanced three-theater screen training simulator using innovative technology that is typically available only to law enforcement, military, and government agencies. Valor Defense is honored to offer this service to everyone. The facility is run by a group of first responders and civilians who understand the value of muscle memory during times of extreme duress. The unique experience offered by Valor Defense Academy helps to improve muscle memory alongside building confidence in an environment that is safe and controlled.

The fully customizable simulator allows for practice in a variety of scenarios and circumstances, including but not limited to, single or multiple targets, interactive moving targets, popping steel plates, immersive gunfights, military battlefields, competition shooting stages, and worse-case shooting encounters. Valor Defense even offers a simulated Zombie Apocalypse experience for fans of the undead.

Individuals can expect to pay $100 for four hours of simulator use. These hours can be broken into smaller increments to be used over a month, if desired. Private groups of two to six people will pay $25 an hour per person. Participants are not required to own or rent any firearms, holster, protective gear, or ammo, as everything needed for training is provided at no extra charge. Valor Defense also offers shooting qualification classes for a License to Carry, Pistol Marksmanship classes, Holster Draw & Reload classes, and Clear Weapon Malfunctions instruction.

Shady Oaks Gun Range

Located about 25 miles northwest of Austin, the Shady Oaks Gun Range caters to all skill levels and offers a clean, safe, and friendly shooting environment. The facility boasts a 25-yard indoor pistol range and a 50-yard indoor rifle range, as well as an extensive line of gun rentals. Other available services include License to Carry (LTC) classes and other group classes, one-on-one lessons, and a full retail store with new and used firearms, accessories, and ammunition.

The safety standards at Shady Oaks Gun Range exceed the NRA and NSSF design guides. High-intensity LED lighting offers a clear sight profile, while low-light configurations are also available. The advanced acoustic design helps to cut down on noise levels, and the sophisticated HEPA air management system eliminates lead and other contaminates. Other range features include magnum-proof clear lane partitions for both visibility and safety, as well as electric target retrievers that allow for the shooting distance to be quickly and easily adjusted.

Range rental fees are for 45-minute increments. Pistol lanes are $15 per person, and rifle lanes are $20. Prices are reduced for two people sharing the same lane, and kids shoot free with a paying adult. Discounts are available for active duty military, law enforcement, and first responders. Annual memberships can also be purchased and, in addition to other benefits, grant the cardholder unlimited range time. Various firearms can be rented for a one-time, per-visit fee of $20. LTC classes start at $100, depending on the option chosen, and private instruction fees are $60 per hour, which includes range and instructor fees.

Shady Oaks Gun Range is open every day from noon to 6 p.m., with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. However, due to COVID-19, the range is currently operating at reduced capacity.

Austin Rifle Club

Established more than 100 years ago, the Austin Rifle Club is a family-friendly shooting range situated about 20 miles east of Austin. Don't let the name fool you. This members-only gun range has lanes for rifles as well as pistols. Members get unlimited access to the range, and are welcome to bring guests along.

Although the Austin Rifle Club requires a membership, nearly two dozen different classes are available to the public. Classes include safety, personal protection, hunter education, and more. They also have an ongoing calendar of events, including adult and youth matches.

The Austin Rifle Club does not have a listed phone number. However, additional information can be found on their website, including how to become a member. Questions can also be sent via email to membership@austinrifleclub.org.
