After acing a grueling 20,000-round endurance qualification with no malfunctions, a variant of the FN 509 MRD was recently selected by the Los Angeles Police Department as the agency's new duty pistol.

While the agency – the third-largest municipal police department in the world after New York and Chicago – has been using and authorizing a series of Berettas, Glocks, and Smith & Wessons over the last several generations, FN's optics-ready mid-sized 9mm is apparently now at the top of the food chain in the City of Angels.

"The Los Angeles Police Department is one of the largest and most elite law enforcement agencies in the country, with roughly 10,000 uniformed officers, and we are proud that they have chosen the FN 509 MRD-LE as their next duty pistol,” said Mark Cherpes, president and CEO of FN America. “The FN 509 MRD-LE is the only choice for agencies seeking an extremely capable and versatile duty pistol platform with proven reliability, accuracy, and optic interoperability. Serving the men and women of an outstanding law enforcement agency like the LAPD brings great pride to everyone at FN, we look forward to supporting their police force with a remarkable handgun platform their officers will rely on every day.”

The 509 MRD-LE selected has a 4-inch target-crowned hammer-forged barrel with a polished chamber and ramp. Other features include the company's new flat-faced precision trigger and high-performance striker, adapted from the FN 509 LS Edge. It also boasts three-dot tritium night sights that co-witness to installed micro red dots that can be mounted via FN's Low-Profile Optics-Mounting System, originally developed for the Army's Modular Handgun System program.

The 509 MRD-LE differs from the standard 509 MRD by having the duty-rated flat-faced trigger of the 509 Edge LS and night sights. It is provided with three 17-round magazines, three frame backstraps, and four optics plates in a ballistic case.  (Photos: FN)

The patented FN Low-Profile Optics Mounting System includes multiple plates for a variety of micro red dots, including Leupold's Delta Point Pro, the Trijicon RMR, Doctor Optic, Vortex Venom/Viper/Razor, C-More STS2, and Burris sights. Meanwhile, the three-dot tritium night sights co-witness.

“LAPD needed the ability to quickly and securely mount a variety of duty-rated micro red dots to their service pistols to improve the accuracy potential of their handguns and their officers,” said Charles “Bucky” Mills, senior director of Law Enforcement Sales for FN America. “FN pioneered the MRD mounting technology the LAPD required, enabling precision shot placement and immediate target engagement no matter the environment.”
