Federal Shows off Shorty 00 Buckshot, 30 Super Carry & 22 Punch
Federal Premium had tons of new ammo products at the recent NRA Annual Meeting in Houston including a new Shorty shotgun shell, the very spicy .30 SC, and a better rimfire defensive load.
Above we spoke to Chris Laack, Federal's Handgun Ammo Product Manager about just what makes the .30 Super Carry so special.
"We wanted to start with a clean slate and design a carry cartridge as we would design it today, knowing what we know today about modern ammunition manufacturing and what we know today," said Flack of the ground-up nature of the .30SC's development. "What we wanted to do was find us something that would potentially allow for guns to be smaller, to have a little less recoil force, but to have terminal performance that was as close as possible to 9mm as we could get it."
The new .30 Super Carry is a little bit faster, and with a smaller .312 caliber diameter than the 9mm which allows for more rounds in the gun while keeping performance that meets or in some cases exceeds 9mm. An ideal premise for concealed carry. (Photo: Paul Peterson/Guns.com)
Besides Federal's .30SC offerings, parent company Vista is making sure the whole umbrella of ammo works including Speer, American Eagle, CCI Blazer, and Remington are delivering loads to the market. (Photo: Paul Peterson/Guns.com)
Shorty 00 Buckshot & 22 Mag Punch
We spoke to Daniel Compton, CCI & Federal's Product Line Manager, about the company's new and exciting Federal Force X-2 00 buck pellet loaded in a 1.75-inch Shorty shotgun shell. Optimized for Mossberg's 590S series pump gun, which will hold a Baker's Dozen of the Shorty shells, the new Force X load still gives a 6-pellet 00 load in each hull.
"It's a 6-pellet load, it's buffered-- that buffer helps with compression and gives us a little tighter pattern on it," said Compton. "But we really did try to optimize it for that 'one-room' size, to get that optimum 6-to-10-inch pattern within that short space. It's really tailored to that home defense, personal defense, situation."

Another new product from Federal Premium this year is in the company's Punch Personal Defense options, now in the 22 Win. Mag. Rimfire cartridge, which offers 12-to-14-inches of penetration.
The case of the Punch .22WMR is nickel-plated for easier extraction and corrosion resistance and uses a larger 45-grain bullet and extreme velocities to deliver performance that should make it popular in .22 Mag revolvers as well as some new pistols on the market such as Walther's WMP. Federal notes that some 40 percent of people who bought rimfire handguns cited self-defense concerns as the primary reason, so with the new Punch series, they hope to meet that need. (Photo: Paul Peterson/Guns.com)
