Mossberg continues to quietly lead the way for hunters seeking practical, feature-rich firearms at accessible prices. The brand’s offerings on display at SHOT Show 2023 in Las Vegas are proof.

Perhaps the biggest news is Mossberg’s Patriot LR Tactical bolt-action rifle, which bridges the gap between hunting, long-range competition, and tactical uses. The company calls this an “adjustment-ready, customizable package.” It’s built on the proven Patriot line of bolt-action rifles, but this one sees some serious upgrades.

There’s an MDT Field Stock Chassis System in flat dark earth on the stock with an adjustable LOP and comb height. Aluminum V-block bedding adds to overall stability and the resulting accuracy. There are Magpul M-LOK attachment slots along both sides of the forend and the base as well as a top Picatinny rail.

The fluted bolt is similar to other Patriot rifles, as is the threaded barrel. The same LBA user-adjustable trigger is also here with a weight range from 2-7 pounds, while the oversized trigger guard easily accommodates gloved shooters. The tactical bolt handle is oversized, too.

Three chamberings are launching simultaneously – 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, and .308 Winchester, each with a medium bull barrel in either 22 or 24 inches. There are both seven and 10-round MDT AICS magazines, depending upon the chambering. A 20-MOA top rail is ideal for scope mounting and distance shooting.

Speaking of distance, company reps have stretched the legs on the LR Tactical to nearly 1,000 yards with precision accuracy, limited only by the shooting range’s max distance. The rifles weigh in at 8.8 to 9.4 pounds with an overall length of 42.25 to 44.25 inches. MSRP is set at only $1,035, making this one of the more affordable, customizable chassis rifles on the market.

Turkey Shotguns

While the LR Tactical draws all the lookers, Mossberg continues cranking out sensible hunting shotguns. The buzzword feature in the turkey-hunting world has become optics readiness, and Mossberg is leading the charge on that front. Last year, it debuted a pair of new semi-automatic 940 Pro Turkey models with the machined receiver cutout for direct mounting low-profile RMSc-pattern micro red dots.

Now for 2023, Mossberg is tailoring three proven models with optics readiness for gobbler chasers. The additions include two Model 500 pump-action choices as well as a Model 835 Ulti-Mag pump. The 500s see a 24-inch barreled .410 bore alongside a 22-inch barreled 20-gauge version. The 835 is the magnum 3.5-inch-chambered version fitted with a 24-inch barrel. All are covered stem to stern in Mossy Oak Greenleaf camouflage, fiber-optic front sights, and an X-Full choke tube.

Mossberg proves its full dedication to the turkey hunting market, with the addition of two semi-automatic models as well. The SA-20 and SA-28. Joining Mossberg’s already successful SA-410 Turkey gun, the SA-20 now sees a pair of models with both a standard model and a Turkey Tactical. Likewise, there’s a sub-gauge SA-28 Tactical Turkey. All three variants use a 22-inch barrel, fiber-optic ghost-ring sights, a Picatinny rail, and Mossy Oak Greenleaf coverage. The Tacticals see the addition of a synthetic pistol grip.

The 940 Pro family of hardcore autoloaders gets a few upgrades for 2023 as well. Mossberg is adding a more traditional hardwood-stocked version to the 940 Pro Field Walnut. Taking that optics readiness one step further, Mossberg partnered with Holosun to offer a combo package – the 940 Pro Tactical Holosun Combo

Other less splashy news includes a new 20-gauge Gold Reserve Black Label over-under addition to the Reserve series of O/Us, a new 28-gauge black synthetic SA-28 Field, 590S optics-ready pump actions, a 500 Retrograde Field pump, and Maverick 88 Field Camo pumps.

7mm PRC Caliber Additions

Mossberg stays on the cutting edge of caliber additions, chambering its bolt-action Patriot Predator rifles for 7mm PRC. Two model variants offer different finish options, and both were on display for 2023 with a 24-inch barrel. The first is the eye-catching Cerakote/Strata camo and the latter flat-dark-earth synthetic and matte-blued metalwork. Like other Patriot Predator models, there’s a Picatinny rail, fluted barrel, threaded muzzle, spiral-fluted bolt, drop-box magazine, and adjustable LBA trigger.

No matter your interest, Mossberg most likely has your hunting needs covered. And no matter the task, it’s safe to say there’s no grass growing beneath the feet of designers and gun makers at Connecticut-based O.F. Mossberg & Sons.
