Think western-style single action wheelguns and chamberings like .357 Magnum and .45 Colt rise to the forefront. Yet modern cowboys have been yearning for common CCW chamberings--ahem, 9mm--to make their way over to six-guns.

Those who’ve already built a stockpile of 9mm ammunition will want to take a gander at Italian gunbuilder F.LLI Pietta’s new-for-2023 offerings on display at the 2023 SHOT Show in Las Vegas. We got a first-hand look at all the new offerings, and--spoiler alert--there were a few unexpected finds.

Pietta’s Single Actions

The self-proclaimed “best in cowboy guns” expands with five new 9mm model variants. Each is tailored around an existing 1873 Great Western II (GWII) line. For those unfamiliar with Pietta, these guns wear hammer-forged steel barrels and the classic lines of Colt’s single action six shooters.

According to company advertising, “just like the original Colt’s, these period correct revolvers have a floating firing pin in the hammer and case-hardened frames… making GWII the most sought after, durable, and reliable single action revolver on the market.”

The five 9mm models join the company’s more traditional wheelgun chamberings, including .357 Magnum/.38 Special, .44-40 Winchester, and .45 Colt.

The New 9mm Single Action Great Western II Revolvers

Californian: 9mm with 4.75-inch barrel with a frame that is drop forged and then CNC machined and wearing a case color finish. A solid wood grip rounds out the Californian.

Gunfighter: Two versions of this 9mm are available with 4.75- and 3.5-inch barrel respectively. They both sport case hardened frame, brass backstrap and trigger guard, and 2 piece checkered black polymer grips. The Gunfighter family pays homage to the notorious gunfighters of the old west.

Posse: 9mm with 3.5-inch barrel, case hardened frame, and wood grip. The Posse has a small cut-around in the ejector housing that allows the ejector rod-head to pivot slightly to the side. This allows the base pin to be removed easily.

Liberty: 9mm with 3.5-inch barrel, blued frame with laser engraving, and Liberty Eagle Ultra ivory grip. The combination of those grips and the engraving make this one of the most eye-catching models.
