The company that started the 5.7mm craze in the 1990s has some new fodder for the rapidly growing tribe of firearms chambered in the caliber to include both training and personal defense rounds.
The two new loads are the FN DFNS (SS200), carrying a 30-grain jacketed hollow point bullet, and the FN GUNR (SS201), a 40-grain full metal jacketed cartridge.
The FN DFNS (SS200) is billed by the company as "the first 5.7x28mm ammunition perfected for personal protection and delivers safe, reliable performance," and has published specs of 2,067 FPS velocity delivering approximately 286 foot-pounds of energy from the muzzle. MSRP is $39.99, which is increasingly competitive when you look at the fact that 5.7 had typically hovered at around $1 per round in the past few years.
FN says the unique 30-grain JHP bullet on the DFNS load contains a copper-tin powdered core designed to expend energy quickly and efficiently while cycling reliably. The company also stresses it has been certified by independent testing to meet the FBI’s ammunition testing protocol to ensure that this high-performance round delivers accuracy and consistent expansion.
The FN GUNR (SS201) is meant for training on the range, with its 40-grain FMJ clocking a milder 1,870 FPS. The MSRP is a more affordable (for 5.7) $26.99 per 50-round box.
FN says the GUNR load has extremely low felt recoil and improved accuracy at extended ranges while delivering reliable feeding across all 5.7-chambered firearms, comparing it in performance to the company’s legacy 5.7mm sporting loads.
FN has been in the ammo game for as long as the 5.7 has been around, with loads starting with the initial SS190 30 years ago and moving through the SS191, SS192, et. al bringing us to 2024's new SS200 and SS201 series.
The company says it will be transitioning legacy loads still in production such as the SS197SR and SS195LF from their familiar blue, black and white packaging to the of same style of branding used by the DFNS and GUNR. (Photo: Chris Eger/Guns.com)
NATO and CIP-standardized, the 5.7 caliber has become increasingly popular in recent years, with FN upgrading its own Five-seveN pistol line to a new optics-ready MK3 standard as companies like CMMG, Diamondback, KelTec, Ruger and S&W have introduced varied pistol and PCC platforms for consumers.
Similarly, ammo makers such as Federal, Fiocchi, and Speer have jumped into the market to help increase supply options.
