Long-range handgun varmint hunters and fans of the potent sting of Townsend Whelen's vaunted .22 Hornet are sure to welcome the news this week from Ruger

Debuted in 1987 as the ideal hunting revolver and a sidearm for those headed into a predator-filled backcountry, the Ruger Super Redhawk has been chambered in most "big bore" wheel gun calibers over the years, including .44 Mag., .454 Casull, and .480 Ruger.

Well, this week Ruger spun that concept around and released a full-sized Super Red in the diminutive .22 Hornet. At 66 ounces, it still has the famous all-stainless-steel construction, extended frame, and triple-locking cylinder the revolver is known for, just now with an eight-shot cylinder for the centerfire .22.

Unloaded weight is just over 4 pounds and should help eat up the felt recoil of the .22 Hornet round, which can deliver a 50-grain pill with velocities approaching 2,700 fps – more than doubling the energy seen on the rimfire .22 Magnum.

The MSRP on the new Ruger Super Redhawk in .22 Hornet is set at $1,499.
