Earlier this year SIG Sauer followed up on its first striker-fired 10mm handgun with something a bit more compact – and we have all the details.

In early 2022, SIG debuted the new caliber option for its hugely successful P320 platform of pistols: the 15+1 capacity 10mm XTen. We extensively evaluated one with box after box of punishing 10mm loads and were impressed with it, the biggest complaint being that its size limited carry options.

Well, the company has an answer to that with the new XTen Comp.

The folks at SIG sent Guns.com one for testing and that is just what we have been doing.

Still chambered in potent 10mm Auto and using the same 15-round flush-fit magazine as the full-sized XTen, the (gently) smaller XTen boasts a 3.8-inch bull barrel instead of the standard 5-incher as seen on its big brother. This also shortens the slide and takes some weight (a quarter pound) off the scales.

The XTen Comp is 7.6 inches overall and 5.6 inches tall. (All photos except where noted: Chris Eger/Guns.com)

We found the unloaded weight to be 29 ounces. Compare this to the 33-ounce unloaded weight of standard XTen.

Compare in size the XTen Comp, left, with the full-sized XTen. Note they have the same height and width but a shorter frame and top half in terms of length.

And the XTen Comp with the 9mm SIG M17. Note the dramatically deeper and sculpted grip on the 10mm.

And the XTen Comp with the standard 1911. The 10mm is shorter and lighter, at least unloaded, but heads to the field with twice the magazine capacity as the iconic .45.
The SIG Sauer XTen Comp in 10mm field stripped
The XTen Comp field strips like any standard P320, and the serialized Fire Control Unit (FCU) can be removed from the polymer grip fram – setting it up for an easy swap to different 10mm/45-sized 320-series frames. The white gunk is a heavy lithium-style gun grease that SIG coats the internals with before shipping.
The SIG Sauer XTen Comp in 10mm slide
The slide is significant, with thick walls that give it the feel of heavy ordnance. Without a barrel and recoil assembly, we found the slide to weigh 16.5 ounces all by itself. Again, note the heavy white factory grease.
The SIG Sauer XTen Comp in 10mm expansion chamber
Speaking of the slide – which tapes out at about 6.5 inches across the top – includes an open-top "integrated expansion chamber" that runs past the muzzle of the 3.8-inch barrel, a design that turns it into a ported compensator that cannot come loose with firing. SIG uses this on lots of its Comp model pistols, including 9mm P320s and the P365, and the company says it drops felt recoil by as much as 20 percent.

Surface controls include a large triangular magazine release that is reversible as well as an ambi slide catch. Note the undercut to the trigger guard that helps with a good grip, as does the 360-degree texture.
The SIG Sauer XTen Comp in 10mm controls
The ambi slide catch is slim and works as advertised. The overall width is 1.3 inches.

The grip has a high undercut into the extended beavertail to allow better control.
The SIG Sauer XTen Comp in 10mm Picatinny rail
The three-slot M1913 Picatinny accessory rail on the grip frame of the XTen Comp is shorter than the five-slot rail on the full-sized XTen but is still long enough for large WMLs such as the SureFire X300.
The SIG Sauer XTen Comp in 10mm sights
When it comes to sights, the XTen Comp ships with excellent steel X-RAY3 day/night sights and carries a Leupold DeltaPoint Pro/SIG PRO optics footprint under the plate for those looking to run a red/green dot. The sight radius is 5.7 inches.
The SIG Sauer XTen Comp in 10mm trigger
The flat-faced trigger is the same as found on the XTen. It is superb for a factory striker-fired pistol. We found it to break crisply at a hair over 4 pounds after just under a half-inch of travel at the tip of the bow, with a correspondingly short reset.

Check out this short video of the XTen Comp on the range, strong hand only, and you can get a view of the trigger in action:

We found the XTen Comp, fully loaded with 16 rounds of spicy 180-grain Nosler ASP (Assured Stopping Power) JHPs, to hit the scales at 43 ounces.

SIG pitches the XTen Comp the perfect companion for outdoorsmen headed into the backcountry, providing 16 shots of 10mm-shaped peace of mind at the ready when needed. This is particularly needed when processing game or cleaning fish in dangerous predator areas. (Photos: SIG)

How does it shoot? In initial testing, we found the compensated slide on the XTen Comp to have a better recoil impulse than either the full-sized XTen or the FN 510 Tactical which we tested recently.

We've got right at 200 rounds of mixed 10mm loads through the pistol thus far with nothing bad to report and will be back with a full review and comparison once we top 500 including use with an optic, and ballistics/velocity tests.
