One of the biggest stories at SHOT Show this week was the rebirth of the innovative H9 handgun platform – this time in a more mature format.

"It's a labor of love," Michael Martha, project manager for the H9 at Daniel Defense, explained to Guns.com. Encapsulating the past three and a half years and over a million rounds of ammunition spent in the development of Daniel Defense's first handgun that isn't an AR platform, Martha described the process as "a reinvention of the original Hudson H9."

Guns.com was on the scene when the H9 had its first debut back at SHOT '17 as well for the introduction of the updated H9A the following year. Sadly, we also covered the pistol's demise along with its parent company in early 2019 – a short but spectacular run.

Shortly after came a federal bankruptcy sale, with several Billie Hudson's patents acquired by Daniel Defense, followed by market research pointing at the Georgia-based black rifle maker seriously looking to reboot the pistol.

Fast-forward to SHOT '24, and the new Daniel Defense H9 has made its return to the market.

Blending a low bore axis with 1911 ergonomics to yield less muzzle flip and faster follow-up shots, the H9 was designed from the ground up to be flat-shooting. Using a 7075 aluminum frame, it weighs 29.6 ounces with an empty 15+1 round magazine and sports fully removable G-10 grip panels. (Photo: Chris Eger/Guns.com)

Striker-fired but with a straight-pull trigger, it is slim, at just 1 inch in width. Using a 4.69-inch barrel, the overall length is 7.69 inches. (Photo: Chris Eger/Guns.com)

The slide is constructed of 4340 steel and is milled to be optics-ready while also carrying carbon steel sights in a dovetail cut with a fiber-optic front. The pistol was shown off with a Trijicon SRO at the show. (Photo: Chris Eger/Guns.com)

The MSRP on the Daniel Defense H9 is set at $1,299. The good news is it is backed by Daniel’s "100 percent Satisfaction guarantee." That support doesn't extend to legacy Hudson-made guns. We asked.
