A sub-$500 alternative to picking up a vintage 9422, Winchester's new cowboy carbine is perfect for plinking or passing on to a new generation.

First introduced in the early 1970s, the Winchester 9422 was a classic little rimfire lever gun offered in several variants to the joy of many tin can hunters. However, it was discontinued almost two decades ago, leaving both a hole in Winchester's catalog and those handy little rifles in circulation to skyrocket as collectors snapped them up – putting them as an unlikely avenue for the current generation to scratch an itch for small game hunting or target shooting.

That changed this week as Winchester Repeating Arms introduced the new Ranger.

Light with a receiver machined out of a solid billet of aluminum protected by a black anodized finish, the Ranger ships with a 20.5-inch barrel and runs 37.75 inches overall. Weight is a nimble 5.25 pounds. Note the standard straight-grip walnut stock with a satin finish. It has a 13-inch length of pull. (Photo: Chris Eger/Guns.com)

Standard features include a brass magazine tube, a trigger with an adjustable overtravel allowing users to semi-customize their guns, a traditional three-position (dropped, half-cock, and cocked) hammer, adjustable rear sight, and hooded front sight. The chrome-moly steel barrel uses button-rifling, ends in a  recessed crown, and is produced in the same factory that makes the company's Wildcat and Xpert rimfires. Made in Turkey under Wrangler's tight specifications keeps the price of the new Winchester Ranger at $419.99, as suggested, a figure likely lower at retail. Company officials say the gun will be shipping this quarter.
