Before the AR-15 and 5.56, the battle rifle was the go-to choice for militaries and sportsmen across the globe. Chambered in full-power rifle cartridges, battle rifles pack much more of a punch than the modern sporting rifle.
The second half of the 20th century was the golden era of battle rifles, with classics like the G3 and FAL dominating in the West. However, as the intermediate cartridge became popular with the adoption of the AK-47 and M16, battle rifles slowly took a back seat. Even in a diminished role, some great battle rifles have been introduced, such as the FN SCAR, H&K 417, and many AR-10 variants.

Battle rifles have a lot going for them, and there are plenty of reasons why people love them. The platform excels at offering extended shooting distance and increased power, making it a more viable option for designated marksmen, hunting, and increasing range in long-distance environments.
