Weatherby Brings New Obsidian, Spike Camp Rifle Models for 2024
Wyoming-based Weatherby continues to grow its staple Vanguard bolt-action hunting rifle line and brought two new models to the recent 2024 NRA Annual Meetings in Dallas.
Like all Vanguards, both of the new models have a sub-MOA guarantee for a three-shot group fired through a cold barrel, a three-position safety, cold hammer-forged barrel, integrated recoil lug, one-piece fluted bolt body, an M16-style extractor, and a user-adjustable two-position match-grade trigger.
The new models include the Vanguard Obsidian – an entry-level ($549, suggested) synthetic-stocked rifle in 16 caliber options – and the Vanguard Spike Camp, so named as it sports a very nice Boyd's Spike Camp laminate thumbhole stock.
Vanguard Obsidian
Using a #2 contour barrel with a threaded muzzle in 15 out of 16 calibers (with .350 being the oddball), the Obsidian ships with a Monte Carlo-style black polymer stock. Meanwhile, the barrel, receiver, bolt, bolt knob, and safety carry a Graphite Black Cerakote finish. Weight is in the 7.5-pound range. (Photos: Don Summers/Guns.com)
Caliber options will include .22-250 Rem, .223 Rem, .243 Win, .25-06 Rem, .257 Wby Mag, .270 Win, .30-06, .300 Wby Mag, .300 Win, .308 Win., 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, 6.5-300, 7mm Rem, 7mm-08, .350 Legend, and 7mm PRC. Barrel length runs between 20 and 26 inches, depending on caliber, with most sporting a 24.
Both new models have factory threaded barrels.
Vanguard Spike Camp
The Vanguard Spike Camp gets its name from the distinctive Boyd’s Spike Camp thumbhole laminate hardwood stock. The barrel and receiver carry a Tungsten Cerakote finish, while the bolt, bolt knob, and safety have a Graphite Black Cerakote, giving the metal surfaces a two-tone effect. The Spike Camp stock allows for a free-floated barrel and has standard sling studs.
Clocking in with a heavy #3 contour barrel with a shorter 20-inch barrel length, the new Spike Camp model is a handy rifle that tapes out at just 40 inches overall.
Offered in .223 Rem, .308 Win, 6.5 Creedmoor, and .350 Legend, all ship with threaded (5/8-24 TPI) barrels. Like the Obsidian, it hits the scales in the 7.5-pound range. MSRP is $999.
