Smith & Wesson Debuts New Bodyguard 2.0 .380 ACP Pistol
Tennessee-based S&W on Tuesday announced an update to its .380 caliber Bodyguard pistol line for 2024.
First introduced in 2014, the M&P branded 6+1 capacity Bodyguard .380 semi-auto carry gun included an internal hammer and molded finger groves in the grip. It was Smith's answer to popular pocket pistols in the same caliber/size such as the Ruger LCP and KelTec P-3AT.
The new Bodyguard 2.0 maintains the same general dimensions and caliber while clocking in as a striker-fired gun. Improvements from the legacy model include an ergonomic design that ditches the finger grooves and adds slide serrations along almost the entire length of the slide, a flat-face trigger, and a higher magazine capacity – boasting a 10+1 round flush-fit mag and a 12+1 extended mag.
The new S&W Bodyguard 2.0 has a 2.75-inch barrel and an overall length of 5.25 inches. Weight is a svelte 9.8 ounces while height with the flush-fit mag remains at a pocketable 4.1 inches. (Photos: S&W)
Besides being striker-fired, the new Bodyguard 2.0 has a trigger safety. The pistol is offered in versions with and without a thumb safety for the same price.
The sights include a blacked-out rear U-notch and an orange Tritium day/night front post. Sorry, it is not cut for optics, even though this is 2024. The magazine release is reversible.
The MSRP on the new Bodyguard 2.0 is $449 and the gun ships with two magazines. This compares to the $399 ask of the standard M&P Bodyguard .380.
"The Bodyguard 2.0 is a breakthrough new micro-sized striker-fired pistol from Smith & Wesson," said Andrew Gore, S&W's Handgun Product Manager. "Although small in size, the Bodyguard 2.0 has an impressive capacity, crisp trigger-pull, and exceptional controllability. The combination of new aggressive, but not sharp, slide serrations, and strategic texturing over the frame aid in the pistol’s superior performance leading it to the front of the micro category."
Splitting hairs, the new Bodyguard 2.0 is a curious offering from S&W, which already has several very compact striker-fired guns on tap, such as the Shield Plus, Equalizer, and Shield EZ – which all offer similar feature sets.
Time will tell.
For now, early reviews seem positive, with Hunter Constantine, Sootch00, and Chris Cerino weighing in, below.
