Barrett Turns Heads with SSRS Grenade Launcher, Plus Updates MRADELR
SHOT Show is always a good place to see what is happening on the military service front, and this year Barrett was showing off a new prototype for a 30mm grenade launcher. The Barrett Squad Support Rifle System, or SSRS, is an experimental support rifle being tested for military adoption.
The SRSS created a lot of buzz at the show.
The SSRS is a joint project between Barrett and MARS Inc. and is a recoil-operated system similar to designs like the M107 or M82. The system also has a patent-pending recoil-dampening design, bringing the recoil down to around the same as firing a 7.62 round out of an AKM.
That 40mm is no joke.
MARS and Barrett believe this new system bridges the gap between 25mm and 40mm, offering a lighter cartridge over the standard 40mm that can still be effective on target. The design has lots of programmable ammunition options, like airburst, HE, smoke, AP, and many more. Ultimately, this allows the user faster fire than a 40mm, and more power and round capabilities over the 25mm.
The SSRS is still in the experimental phase, but both companies are hoping to be competitive in the upcoming trials.
The Barrett MRADELR is an incredible precision rifle from a company that has cut its teeth in the precision market. This year, the MRADELR’s modular system got an upgrade with a 30-inch .416 Barrett barrel that is easily installed to the platform. This gives it a slightly shorter barrel length than the original 36-inch barrel.
Additionally, the company is offering barrel maker kits so that users can take their barrels to gunsmiths to get spun for other calibers. The kit includes everything you need to tune the rifle for whatever big caliber suits your needs.
