The Sunshine State could see a six-week tax holiday on firearms, ammo, and gun accessories at the urging of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

The popular Republican governor this week released his proposed $115.6 billion state budget for Fiscal Year 2025-26, which cuts costs, eliminates 741 state jobs, has a $14.6 billion reserve fund, and comes in some $3 billion lower than last year's budget. Included with its 32 pages of proposed tax relief is a "Second Amendment Summer."

The sales tax holiday would run from May 26, 2025, through July 4, 2025, and cover modern firearms, ammunition, and accessories. The accessories include "charging handles, cleaning kits, holsters, optics, pistol grips, and stocks, but excluding apparel."

A press release from the Governor's office claims this could save Floridians an estimated $8 million on guns and gun accessories between Memorial Day and the Fourth of July.

As Florida's state sales tax rate is currently set at 6 percent, the savings on, say a $2,000 FN SCAR would be about $120 – enough to buy some similarly tax-free ammo or a Pelican case.

While Louisiana and Mississippi already have annual 2A tax holidays, the latter stretching back to 2014, they typically only run across a designated three-day weekend. Similar measures have been proposed in the past in Arkansas, Georgia, Tennessee, Texas, and Ohio.
