Three Colt M4 Carbines Show Different Takes on a Classic
The AR-15 continues to be one of the most popular firearm designs in the United States, and that rich history owes a lot to Colt's Manufacturing. We recently got a shipment of various Colt M4 Carbine configurations and thought we would compare a few of these rifles for you.
2013 Configuration
The first rifle is labeled on the box as the 2013 Configuration, aka Federal Patrol Carbine. This rifle is chambered in 5.56 with a 16-inch barrel, a carbine-length gas system, and an A2-style birdcage muzzle device. The rifle features a Geissele handguard with M-LOK mounting slots, QD cups for slings, and short rail sections at the muzzle for mounting accessories.

The Geissele handguard with M-LOK slots, QD sling cups, and Pic rails stands out on this model.
The upper receiver features a top rail that runs from the tip of the handguard to the charging handle. The charging handle is a standard, left-side-release design. The top rail features Magpul MBUS Pro iron sights.
Controls are standard AR-15 style.
The lower receiver shows standard AR-15 controls and is not ambidextrous. The left side of the receiver features the selector switch and bolt catch, while the magazine release is on the right side. The rifle feeds from standard AR-pattern magazines and includes one Magpul 30-round P-mag.
And there's an adjustable Magpul stock.
The pistol grip is a standard A2-style AR grip, while the stock is an adjustable Magpul stock.
LE Trooper
The LE Trooper version of the M4 Carbine is also a 5.56 chambered 16-inch barrel with a carbine-length gas system and an A2-style birdcage.

This version of the rifle has a slim free-floated handguard with M-LOK slots. There are no sling mounts on the handguard.

This M4 has familiar AR controls as well.
The rifle features the same standard AR-15-style controls, which are not ambidextrous. The LE Trooper version includes a standard charging handle, along with an A2 pistol grip and a standard M4-style adjustable stock.
7.62x39 Carbine
The last rifle is unique, as it marks a bit of a shift in Colt’s focus. Colt was acquired by the CZ group several years ago, and since then, the company has made moves to expand the brand and AR platform in Europe.
This recent production M4 Carbine is chambered in 7.62x39mm and marks a shift in Colt's focus to the European market.
This new CZ-owned Colt production M4 Carbine is chambered for 7.62x39mm. This cartridge is popular in Europe and was not offered in Colt catalogs prior to the CZ acquisition.
The 16-inch barrel is 203-cut and wears an A1-style flash hider.
There's a polymer handguard and fixed front sight base.

The lower receiver is designed with standard AR-15 controls and uses the A2-style pistol grip and standard M4-style adjustable stock. The rifle feeds from 7.62x39-pattern AR mags and includes one Duramag 30-round magazine.
