Colt Offers Free Firearm Safety Classes for Residents of Georgia
In a tip of the hat to the gun-friendly Peach State, Colt Manufacturing announced late last month that it will be fully funding Georgia’s "Give It a Shot" program.
Created by Georgia’s Department of Natural Resources, the program provides hands-on firearms training with certified instructors to Georgia residents.
Colt’s contribution will make enrollment free for eligible residents over 12 months via the company’s Colt Safety Scholarship. It’s a move that prompted the state’s Republican Gov. Brian Kemp to commend the company.

“Colt is proud to support this initiative that reflects our deep commitment to firearm safety, education, and responsible ownership,” said Colt Manufacturing Company President Joshua Dorsey. “By investing in training and education, we’re helping ensure Georgians are equipped with the skills and knowledge to handle firearms safely and responsibly.”
The State of Georgia General Assembly and Senate marched in step with the governor’s support, passing similar resolutions that similarly commended Colt.
Georgia has been a beacon of success for firearms manufacturers and gun ownership in recent years. The state Senate went so far as to pass a tax holiday on guns and ammo in 2024 and again in 2025, and Georgia has proven to be an enticing location for new manufacturing sites as well.
Remington and Taurus recently set up new manufacturing sites in the Empire State of the South. Even ammo maker Norma jumped on the Georgia manufacturing boom when it established its new HQ in Garden City, just north of Savannah, in 2022. The state legislature also passed permitless carry just a month before Norma’s announcement.
All this comes on the coattails of another Colt initiative earlier this year in the form of the Safety Impact Award, which is a program that recognizes “non-profit organizations that exemplify an exceptional commitment to safety in the firearms industry.”
“With Colt’s support, we’re making quality firearms education more accessible than ever,” said Walter Rabon, commissioner of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. “Our Give It a Shot program, intended for those with little to no experience, is an opportunity for any Georgia resident to benefit from education on safe gun handling, shooting fundamentals, and ways to expand their experience post-instruction, while also having a great time on the range.”
