Tennessee-based S&W continues to crank out modern takes on cowboy guns with the introduction of a new Stealth Hunter model this week, chambered in the familiar old "thuddy-thuddy."

Since returning to the lever gun market in early 2024, Smith has introduced assorted variants of its Model 1854 in .44 Magnum, .45 Colt, .357 Magnum, and .45-70 Government before adding the .30-30 to its catalog in September.

Now, the caliber gets the Stealth Hunter treatment with an all-black Armornite finish, a large loop lever, a T6 aluminum hand guard with 15 M-LOK slots, and an extended Picatinny top rail for optics on a platform made smaller due to a compact (and 5/8-24 threaded) 16.3-inch barrel.

The overall length of the 1854 Stealth Hunter is a handy 34.3 inches due to its 16.3-inch threaded barrel. Note the oversized lever loop, polymer stock, and HIVIZ H3 fiber-optic front sight, balanced by an XS Sights adjustable rear ghost ring sight. (Photos: S&W)

Weight is in the 6.9-pound range unloaded and without accessories. Other features include a crossbolt safety, a removable magazine tube for easy unloading, and a flat trigger design. The rifle has a five-shot magazine capacity.

The MSRP of the new S&W Model 1854 Stealth Hunter in .30-30 is $1,499. This compares well to the standard models in the same caliber, which start at $1,399.

We'll be sure to check out this interesting new lever gun at SHOT Show in January, so stay tuned.
