Mossberg is expanding its tactical 990 line of 12-gauge semi-auto shotguns with two new options: the 990 SPX Magpul and 990 SPX Magpul – Class 3. The latter is an NFA-covered short-barreled shotgun, which you can expect to see more of now that the $200 tax on short-barreled NFA items has expired.

These new scatterguns sport either an 18.5-inch barrel or a 14.75-inch barrel. They are decked out in Magpul SGA Adjustable LOP stocks with spacers for a customizable length of pull between 12 and 14 inches. QD ports and M-LOK slots make them sling- and accessory-ready, and they both run the company’s smooth-running 990 gas-vent system.

Unlike the similar-looking 940 Pro Tactical, the 990 series doesn’t require a long, straight return spring in the buttstock. Instead, that feature runs entirely in the forend, which allows for a more tactical, pistol-like grip angle and more diverse stock options.

The 990 SPX Tactical with the 18.5-inch barrel comes in at 7.75 pounds and offers a 7+1 capacity. The shorty Class 3 version is a lighter 7.35 pounds with a 5+1 capacity. Both feature 3-inch chambers and are threaded for the Accu-Choke system. They ship with a cylinder-bore choke installed.

Both models run ghost-ring rear sights that can be swapped for a micro red dot. The guns ship with three additional adapter plates for mounting RMR, Docter, and Leupold footprint optics.

A heat shield runs up to the top of the forend. The gas piston, magazine tube, hammer, and sear are covered in a nickel-boron coating with special finishes for corrosion resistance. The bolt handle, elevator, bolt release, and beveled loading port are oversized for ease of use.

The top-mounted tang safety also makes this an ambidextrous platform.

Both models have an MSRP of $1,309.
