Chiappa Drops New Steampunk 1873 Black Thunder Revolvers
Chiappa has a new pair of Italian-made, retro-futuristic 1873 Black Thunder revolvers chambered in .44 Rem Mag that blend modern features with the classic Single Action Army design of the Wild West.
Representing a significant evolution of the classic SAA design first introduced by Colt in the late 19th century, these new “classics” are feature-rich. Chiappa offers them with either 5.5-inch or 7.5-inch barrels and pairs the Old West design with updated adjustable target sights and barrel-integrated Picatinny rails for optics.
The single-action six-shot wheelguns sport a tensioned barrel system made from a steel inner barrel sleeved in an aluminum outer housing. They are chambered in .44 Remington Magnum and are meant for sporting and hunting needs. (Image: Chiappa)
A semi-hexagonal profile adds extra steampunk vibes to these big irons. That unique geometry cuts weight while maintaining structural strength and balance. A transfer-bar safety makes the guns safe to carry without sacrificing the familiar SAA feel and manual of arms.
Chiappa enlarged the trigger guard to improve shooting with a gloved hand in cold environments. The fiber-optic iron sights are also a huge improvement over the crude notch and half-moon sights featured on most original Single Action Army revolvers.
The rubber Hogue grips are also a significant redesign improvement, but Chiappa kept the profile compatible with Ruger’s Super Blackhawk-style grips.
MSRP is set at $1,115 for the model with a 7.5-inch barrel and $1,145 for the 5.5-incher.
