Normally, I would rather build an AR than buy a complete one, but Griffin Armament might change my mind. The company is doing its best to challenge my outlook on factory ARs with its excellent AR-15 and suppressor combos.

This MK2 features Griffin-branded flip-up iron sights, which are made of an alloy, unlike most popular flip-up sights. The handguard features M-LOK mounting slots and a Griffin handstop. This handstop is one of my favorite features on the design, as it squares off the grip and includes texturing for maintaining control.

The MK2 wears a pronged flash hider that can easily accommodate Griffin's Dual-Lok suppressor.

The upper receiver uses Griffin’s SNATCH charging handle, which is ambidextrous and ideal for shooting suppressed. Speaking of suppressed, the muzzle device is a pronged flash hider designed to accommodate the Griffin Dual-Lok line of suppressors.

Overall, while this is not an inexpensive AR, it is built with quality and intention.

Dual-Lok 5 Suppressor

As I said before, the MK2 is ideal for suppressing, so I shot it primarily with Griffin’s Dual-Lok 5 can attached. This 5.56-caliber quick-detach suppressor is designed for heavy use. The spring and ratchet retention system is easily attached and removed. The Dual-Lok 5 features a unique end cap with prongs like a flash hider. This is designed to kill flash as gas builds up in the suppressor.

The Dual-Lok 5 is a heavy-use can with a unique end cap designed to kill flash.

On the range, using a phone app to read decibels, the unsuppressed MK2 registered at 128 decibels. That basically maxed out the app’s capability. With the Dual-Lok 5, the rate dropped to about 108 dB on the reader. It may not be the most accurate measurement, but it shows the decibel drop.

The Dual-Lok 5 performs well with minimal backpressure and significantly reduced noise.

Additionally, Griffin designs its cans to reduce felt backpressure, limiting the amount of gas and debris pushed into the shooter’s face from the gas system. Even when rapidly shooting through a 40-round magazine, I could not tell the difference between suppressed and unsuppressed as far as gas.

On the range

I have a little over 1,200 rounds on this MK2 platform, with over 1,000 of those suppressed. I shot a mix of PMC, Fiocchi, and random ammo can mixes of both 5.56 and .223, without a single jam or malfunction.

The MK2 ate everything I fed it with no hiccups, both suppressed...
...and unsuppressed.

I set this AR up with a Surefire Scout, a Vortex Viper HD 1-10X optic, and a Midwest Industries QD mount. I shot a 10-round grouping of Fiocchi 5.56 55-grain range ammo at 100 yards to gauge the practical accuracy of the gun. The group printed at a little over 2 inches – respectable for range ammo.

Outfitted with a Vortex Viper HD 1-10 scope on a Midwest Industries mount, a Surefire Scout, and the Dual-Lok 5 can, the MK2 is ready to rumble.

This has quickly become one of my favorite AR setups. It’s reliable, accurate, and well thought-out. I even took the MK2 to Texas for a hog hunt with the National Association for Gun Rights, shooting some smaller vermin and using it to finish off pigs. I love the fact that I can run all the controls with my dominant firing hand but still do the same if shooting off hand. The barrel length and suppressor are a great match – not too long, while also not sacrificing accuracy or distance.

The trigger is more polished than a mil-spec design. It has a light and crisp break and makes it easy to get quick and accurate follow-up shots. The handguard and furniture are comfortable, and unlike many manufacturers, Griffin includes features like sling attachment points, backup iron sights, and an excellent handguard. Out of the box, this feels and shoots like a well-made AR that is worth the investment.

I am also madly impressed with the Dual-Lok suppressor. Of all the QD suppressors on the market, this might be the first where I had zero issues with fitment or retention through courses of fire. There is little to no back blast, and the sound reduction is significant – all of that while handing a heavy, rapid shooting schedule.

Summary

Griffin Armament MK2
This has quickly become one of my go-to AR setups.

While Griffin may be known for suppressors, don’t sleep on Griffin Armament firearms. This MK2 combo provided one of the best AR shooting experiences that I have had. In fact, this may be my go-to AR from now on. I am that impressed.

From suppressors to firearms, it’s a blessing to live in a nation with the freedom of the Second Amendment. Remember, the most important thing to do is train! What better way to train than with a Griffin Armament MK2 and Dual-Lok can?
