The folks at SecureIt, the maker of customizable and modular gun storage solutions, gave me a chance see to just how much I actually hated my old firearm safes and lockers. They kindly sent over their popular Agile Model 52 Pro and Fast Box Model 47 safes for some testing.

Easy, functional, and practical for daily use are traits I now insist on for any gun storage solution I put in my house. But it’s taken years and nearly a dozen apartments to figure out what works for me. Frankly, I’ve had to get creative with my storage over the years, because nothing ever seemed to fit my needs and growing firearms collection.

So, here’s what I found when I ditched a few of my old safes for options from SecureIt.

First Impressions

I’ve hated basically every gun cabinet and lock box I’ve ever bought. There were some heavy, expensive safes that I really liked, but the easy-access storage units were always a pain. Guns piled up inside of them awkwardly and never seemed to fit the horribly designed mounts.

It’s worth noting that one of SecureIt’s main areas of focus is providing storage for LEO, first responders, and the military. That’s why these units are not only designed to be highly modular but easy to access for regular, practical use. (Photo: Paul Peterson/Guns.com)

Perhaps my bigger complaint was that most were simply cheap key-based metal boxes. They’re a small step above government file cabinets. It gets very annoying if you need regular access to your firearms and don’t want a bulky key ring that’s fit for a janitor. Hence, the generous keypads on the SecureIt safes really stuck out as a feature I might love.

I also appreciated how they arrived in very robust packing. Several layers of cardboard, package padding, and even wooden bracers kept both safes scuff and dent-free. I’ve had safes arrive with giant dents, dings, and scratches.

I liked the portability of the system. Instead of hauling an entire 105-pound Agile Model 52 safe up to my upstairs office, I was able to carry it in separate panels. Putting the entire thing together only took about an hour of basic labor and another 15 minutes to organize the shelves.

The safe assembles from the inside out to avoid points of weakness on the outside. All in all, I was quite pleased with the looks and feel of both the Agile Model 52 and vertical Fast Box Model 47. The Model 47 didn’t even require any assembly.

Adorned with an oversized, illuminated keypad complete with biometric fingerprint reader on the front door, the real magic behind SecureIt’s Model 52 is the patented CradleGrid inside the safe. The Model 52 Pro from the Agile line comes with a host of internal shelves, storage bins, and rifle cradles. These can all be arranged to fit whatever guns and gear you want to fit inside.

There are no third-party overrides for this safe. Only you have the codes that will open it once you put in your combinations. I appreciate the illumination and the size of the buttons. I’ve used small keypads and tended to fat-finger the buttons often. I have also found the biometric fingerprint reader to work reliably. (Photo: Paul Peterson/Guns.com)

I had zero issues packing in six long guns complete with various optics, several handguns, and all the accessories I might need with tons of room to spare. SecureIt sells additional storage modifications like handgun pegs of various sizes so you can maximize your space.

Here’s a quick rundown of the basic specs and features of the Agile Model 52 Pro kit:

Weight: 105 pounds
External Dimensions: 52 inches tall, 20.25 inches wide, 15.25 inches deep
Internal Dimensions: 51.87 inches tall, 18.25 inches wide, 12.25 inches deep
CradleGrid Kit:

  • Six long-gun cradles
  • Three stock bases that support two buttstocks each
  • Large gear shelf
  • Three small bins
  • Three medium bins
  • One large bin
  • Two large metal trays

Other Extras:

  • Door organizer
  • Two magnetic hooks
  • Two override keys
  • One rechargeable light strip

Programming the electronic keypad and biometric reader proved to be incredibly easy. You can set it up to have a master code and two user codes with three to 12 digits each. I’ve had rotten luck with biometric readers in the past, but this one has held up and become my go-to option for opening the safe.

You can turn the lights and sound on or off for the keypad, and a light will flash if your battery is running low. There are pre-drilled holes on the top, bottom, and sides that can be used to mount the safe to walls and floors and/or stack on and secure other SecureIt modular units.

That brings me to an important point. This safe is amazingly modular, easy to set up, and can expand with the addition of other safe options like the Agile Quad Kit and Agile Stack safes. It organizes and secures your guns and gear while keeping them easily accessible to you, which makes it a superb system for things like ready rooms, offices, home defense plans, storage in households with children, etc. It is not a bank vault.

Long shelves allow you to store additional gear behind the firearms, and SecureIt has a broad range of hooks, handgun pegs, and other accessories for the CradleGrid. (Photo: Paul Peterson/Guns.com)

Breaking into any of these safes would be a challenge, but they are not the tank-like, armor-plated, fireproof behemoths that mimic the bank vaults from the days of Jesse James. That is not their intended purpose.

All of SecureIt’s safes come with a 90-day buy-it-back guarantee. The Agile Model 52 is an approved safety device under the standards of the California DOJ. MSRP for the base Agile Model 52 comes in at $739 with the Model 52 Pro set at $999.

Fast Box Model 47 Specs

SecureIt Fast Box Vertical Safe
The Fast Box Model 47 is much more focused on strategic, concealable storage. This unit could just as easily be placed under a bed, in a car trunk, or inside a narrow closet. (Photo: Paul Peterson/Guns.com)

Where the Agile safes are sized more for a collection of guns and gear, the Fast Box series from SecureIt is tailored to small, hidden spaces and practical rapid response. I opted for the Model 47 Vertical since there’s a space in my home defense plan for a slender, tall safe. But it can just as easily rest on its side for storage under a bed or inside a car trunk.

This model hosts four numbered keys that allow for a code that’s up to eight digits long. The back wall has the same CradleGrid pattern as the Agile safes. It’s designed to hold two long guns and ammo with the option of customizing it for handguns.

Here’s a quick rundown of the basic specs and features of the Agile Model 52 Pro kit:

Weight: 45 pounds
External Dimensions: 47.25 inches tall, 6.75 inches wide, 13 inches deep
Internal Dimensions: 47 inches tall, 6 inches wide, 11 inches deep
CradleGrid Kit:

  • Medium bin
  • Two long-gun cradles
  • Buttstock base to support two long guns

Other Extras:

  • Foam pad for horizontal use
  • Under-the-bed mounting kit
  • Vertical mounting kit

SecureIt Gun Safe Light
Honestly, it’s a small thing, but these slender, rechargeable safe lights are awesome. I got so sick of changing out AAA batteries for my old safe lights that I tossed them in a box to give away. (Photo: Paul Peterson/Guns.com)
SecureIt Fast Box Vertical Safe
You can store two long guns in this safe plus additions like ammo or a handgun. I noticed some folks had issues putting an AR-15 inside the safe with a standard 30-round magazine. However, that is easily resolved if you just pop in a 20-round mag (shown here) and store a bonus 30-round mag above. (Photo: Paul Peterson/Guns.com)

I was able to easily fit my 7+1 Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical shotgun and a basic AR-15, ammo, and a backup handgun into my safe. There are anchor points for mounting either side or the back of the safe to a wall. Additional pre-drilled holes support adding other modular units or bolting the safe to the floor.

The Model 47 is an approved safety device under the standards of the California DOJ. It comes in at an MSRP of $349 for the horizontal model and $379 for the vertical bundle.

Outside Testimonials

I’ve personally found myself quite pleased with how both the Model 47 and Model 52 have fit into my home over the last few months. They have replaced some older key-based safes that I begrudgingly used out of necessity for several years.

SecureIt Safe Warranty

When it comes to your go-to guns and gear, I've learned it generally pays off over time to invest in something that is high quality and really meant to meet your needs up front. I've gone the cheap route before, and there are several empty safes serving as glorified file cabinets in the basement of my home as a result.

That’s my two cents on the matter, but here’s what some other purchasers have said. We’ll start with some unedited feedback from another Agile Model 52 owner I know:

My current situation at home is just me and my wife, so I relied on leaving my firearms in multiple rooms with the gun locks they originally came with. Once my wife started finding random firearms throughout the house, she informed me it was time to get a gun safe. Especially since we plan on having kids soon.

After doing some research and having a conversation with the team over at SecureIt Gun Storage, I decided to go with the Agile Model 52 Pro. This is one of their most popular models and a top seller, over 50,000 sold, with great reviews. It’s also a good option for gun owners who have somewhere in the range of two to six rifles/shotguns and two to eight handguns.

SecureIt Agile Model 52 Safe
Delivery of the Agile Model 52 Pro was prompt. It was delivered to my house within 5-7 business days in two separate brown boxes. Everything was packaged tightly and wrapped accordingly. The parts were also organized properly, which made it easy to categorize setup. The first step was to make sure the lock and biometric codes were working properly. There is a small button on the inside of the door and the directions walk you through each step for entering new codes. It also comes with two cool-looking long keys that can access through the front of the safe for overriding the combo. One thing I really like about SecureIt is that the company does not have any codes stored and can in no way provide your codes to outside parties (no backdoor override). (Photos: Courtesy of reviewer)
SecureIt Agile Model 52 Safe
Next was putting the safe together. This was pretty simple, and the directions were straightforward. In all, it took about two to three hours, but I’m sure some can complete it within an hour if you have two people. One thing to watch out for, when I unwrapped the door, one of the screws fell out and, luckily, I was able to find it right away but keep warning of that. I also noticed the QR code on the light bar that comes with it was expired, but I didn’t really need it, not a deal breaker. (Photos: Courtesy of reviewer)

When putting your firearms in, you might have to remove some of the stocks on your long guns to store more, which isn’t my favorite, but it works for what I currently own, and it’s not that big of a deal. The safe only weighs 105 pounds, so it’s easy to move around even with it fully loaded with your guns and gear. You might want to mount it to the floor or wall, but that is not included. Overall, for where I am at in my gun ownership journey, it made sense, and I am happy with the biometric/keypad safe… and so is my wife, for now!

I took the liberty of online stalking some other reviews of the Agile Model 52. Overall, there were very few negative comments, and most were just minor issues around hiccups with folks setting up their safes at first. The Agile Model 52 had a 4.8/5 rating. (Photo: Paul Peterson/Guns.com)

I like the above review from my friend because it highlights the benefits of a modular, lightweight safe like the Agile and Fast Box options from SecureIt while pointing out some of the limitations.

These are not bank vaults. They are not fireproof. As a collector, I certainly cannot fit all my firearms in the Agile Model 52 Pro. SecureIt offers full-size safes in it Answer line, but these are still practical storage solutions and not impenetrable steel vaults built to survive Judgement Day from the “Terminator” movies. I don’t want a safe that weighs 2,000+ pounds in my upstairs office anyway. It’s way less practical for my needs.

Worth the Upgrade?

SecureIt Gun Storage
A recent study found that 42 percent of American households have at least one firearm, and most of those homes have more than one gun. Gun purchase data also shows that higher rates of gun ownership are looking like the increasingly new normal. That means there are millions of households in need of gun storage solutions for multiple firearms and the number is only growing. SecureIt has options for everything from modular wall units for your gun vault room to smaller handgun Fast Box options. (Image: SecureIt)

Not everyone has the same firearm storage needs, and your needs might change over time. That has certainly been the case for me as a firearms collector. In hindsight, I wish I would have skipped most of the cheap safes and gun cabinets I’ve bought over the years and just invested in something that was modular like this. Then again, that wasn’t always as easy of an option as SecureIt makes it today.

These are not cheap safes, and they’re also not nearly indestructible metal giants. The heavy bank-like safes have their place – including in my house – but the cheapo options are often a waste of money. Almost all have worked their way into my pile of giveaway safes or turned into rarely touched storage lockers.

If it’s in the cards for your budget, upgrading or simply starting off with something modular like this is a solid option that will serve you for years to come.
