Mossberg 500A – 12 Gauge – 28” Barrel – Ducks Unlimited 10/30
According to Mossberg, they’ve sold over 12 million Model 500 shotguns. They’ve been making Model 500 guns since 1961, so I guess that’s what you call, “standing the test of time”. Mossberg had a goal when they started production of this model. They wanted an inexpensive but durable shotgun that could be mass produced in large numbers. Mossberg wasn’t trying to compete with Browning, Benelli or any high-end brand. They knew their target market and they stuck with it.
The Model 500 does a lot of things right. First, it works. Reliably. It’s lightweight. It’s tough. It’s at a price point that doesn’t make you cringe any time that you put a small ding in it.
Our gun (serial number J761552) has a 28 inch vent rib barrel. It will handle 2-3/4” or 3” shells. The barrel has a fixed Modified choke. A single bead sight sits at the end of the barrel. The finish of the barrel is Excellent with the exception of a couple of storage marks on the rib.
The left side of the receiver is stamped Ducks Unlimited 10/30. These were guns that DU gave to local chapters for completing certain chapter required steps on time. Indeed, our customer won this gun in a DU raffle. A tang safety is easily reached by both left and right-handed shooters. The finish on the receiver is in Excellent condition.
The stock is a checkered pistol grip with a brown, ventilated recoil pad at the end. Both the stock and forearm are in Excellent condition, along with the recoil pad.
The bore is clean and minty and the barrel is bright and minty also. The action cycles as expected and we find no problems.
If you’re after an affordable but reliable and nice looking shotgun, you could do a lot worse than this one.

This is a consignment sale and, like all of our consignments, we have not test fired this shotgun. We have performed our function checks and find no issues to report.
