With calibers such as 6.5 Creedmoor and 6.8 Rem SPC, today’s AR-style rifles are ready for the field, offering sportsmen hunting options on a familiar platform.
Jim Ross with Daniel Defense holds class in the above video on the benefits of hunting with an AR platform such as modularity, lightweight, and faster follow-up shots if needed.
He starts with a DD5V4 chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor with a Leupold VX-5HD on top. The combo, says Ross, is good for everything from Georgia whitetails (DD is based in the Peachtree State) to bigger game out West.
Chambered in 6.5mm Creedmoor with a standard 20-round capacity, the DD5 V4 sports a collapsible stock, 18-inch barrel, free-floating M-Lok rail, Mil-Spec trigger, and matte black finish.
After talking up the company’s “quintessential hunting rifle,” the new DELTA 5 bolt gun, chambered in .308, he moves back to the modern sporting rifles with a DD Mk 12.
“I hunt a lot of pigs here in Georgia, and this is my go-to rifle,” says Ross, calling the gun his personal favorite that he wouldn’t necessarily recommend for deer. “I’m also using this for varmint control– so coyotes up on the hunting property.”
The MK 12 uses a cold hammer-forged stainless steel 18-inch barrel, standard flash suppressor, rifle-length gas system with MK12 low profile gas block, M16 profile bolt carrier group, machined 6061-T6 aluminum handguard, and rail panels. It reportedly is also great at putting pork in the freezer
Finally, Ross shows off a standard camo version of Daniel Defense’s Ambush series rifle, highlighting the sporting rifle’s two-stage Geissele SSA trigger, and other features. Offered in traditional .223 Remington as well as 6.8 Rem SPC, and .308 Win, the Ambush is meant for the field. Notably, he also uses a DD Wave suppressor, as use of a can while hunting has been greenlighted in over 40 states.
The Ambush is available in either Kryptek Highlander or Realtree Xtra finish.
Either way you slice it, using an AR for hunting is a serious option these days.
The Canik SFx Rival-S is a steel-framed pistol that costs a lot less than many top-tier race guns but can still give the competition a run for its money.
The TX9 is one of the most affordable, optics-ready duty-size guns out there right now. It proved to be reliable, ergonomic, and accurate out to 20 yards. Plus, its modularity is another big win.
At its root, the 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak is a high-pressure version of the decades-old 6.5 Creedmoor round. The dimensions remain unchanged, yet these young rounds are loaded to 80,000 psi.
