FN America on Monday announced a long-anticipated update to its Five-seveN pistol, one that brings improved ergonomics and an optics-ready slide to the party.

Originally introduced in 1998 after a decade of development during the Cold War, the 5.7 NATO chambered FN Five-seveN, while interesting, feels very dated these days, especially now that the cartridge it fires is seeing a rebirth of sorts in a lot of new guns. Besides lots of tactile changes – enhanced slide serrations and extended cocking ridges at the rear of the slide, an enlarged/reshaped magazine release, new stippled texturing on the grip frame – the new FN Five-seveN Mk3 MRD is miniature red dot ready.

The plate system is compatible with sights from Leupold (DeltaPoint Pro), Trijicon (RMR), Vortex, Burris (FastFire series), Docter, and more. In addition, it ships with three-dot photoluminescent sights that are adjustable for elevation and windage and co-witness with certain MRDs. (Photo: FN America)

"The FN Five-seveN pistol has been immensely popular since its introduction. Its original design capturing the performance of the FN-designed 5.7x28mm cartridge made it an instant success, and it’s positioned to do it yet again with the dramatic redesign of the FN Five-seveN MRD," said Chris Cole, VP of sales and marketing for FN America. "With the addition of an integral optics mounting system on the slide, an already accurate pistol now redefines what handgun accuracy means. We’re truly excited to bring this new pistol to market with features our customers want in their favorite FN caliber."

The FN Five-seveN MRD, like its predecessor, is a 5.7x28mm-chambered, delayed-blowback-operated pistol. Carrying over from the original design are the 20-round standard magazines, safety selector located directly above the trigger, along with the serrated trigger shoe and trigger guard. (Photo: FN America)

When it comes to specs, the FN Five-seveN MRD uses a 4.8-inch cold-hammer-forged barrel to produce a pistol that is 8.2 inches in overall length. Weight, sans mag, is 25.2 ounces. Height is 5.6 inches, sans optics. (Photo: FN America)

MSRP on the new FN Five-seveN MRD, regardless of variant, is $1,449, which is a little more spendy than legacy Mk2 models, but at least you know where the extra is going.
