FN on Tuesday announced a first for the SCAR 17 – a mid-range designated marksman rifle configuration chambered in the 6.5 Creedmoor caliber.

While the full-length 20-inch SCAR 20S series has long listed a 6.5CM variant, the SCAR 17 has typically just been available in 7.62 NATO. The SCAR 17S DMR includes a lot of upgrades over the standard model, including the SSR precision buttstock assembly and Geissele 2-stage trigger seen on the SCAR 20S line.

The big takeaway on this is, using a 16.25-inch barrel, the new 6.5CM version of the SCAR 17 runs a shorter 36.8-inch overall length and 9.5-pound weight, which sounds heavy, but is a lighter and handier platform than the 11.6-pound, 42.8-inch SCAR 20S.

The SCAR 17S DMR will be available in both FDE and an all-black format.

The SCAR 17S DMR
Keeping a 16.25-inch 1:8 twist cold hammer-forged, chrome-lined, free-floating barrel with a muzzle device, the 6.5CM caliber FN SCAR 17S DMR features the enhanced SCAR 20S rear stock with an adjustable cheek rest and length of pull, as well as match trigger for filling the role of a designated marksman rifle. The new rifles are SCAR non-reciprocating charging handle (NRCH) variants, with dual, ambidextrous charging handles that remain static under fire and are user-swappable from left to right. Note that they will ship with a 10-round magazine.

All other familiar SCAR features remain the same, including the hallmark monolithic receiver design and short-stroke gas piston operation with an adjustable low-flash gas regulator.

FN advises these new rifles will be a limited run.

"The SCAR is the most tested rifle platform that FN has ever developed. It was designed to be lightweight, rugged, accurate and modular to give the user a rifle platform that could be configured to their needs," said Chris Cole, FN's VP of Sales. "This new and limited-time build demonstrates the modularity of the SCAR design by combining features of the SCAR 17S heavy carbine and the SCAR 20S precision rifle to create a one-of-a-kind, mid-range designated marksman rifle."

And, drumroll – the new FN SCAR 17S DMR has an MSRP of $4,629. This is about $370 cheaper than the ask on a FN SCAR 20S in the same caliber and about $400 more than the standard SCAR 17 in 7.62.
